May Club Meeting May Club Meeting The May meeting was held on May 4. There were 10 members in attendance. We discussed the Big Buck Classic shoot, our upcoming outdoor 3D, and several other items..
New members: There were two new memberships voted in at the May meeting. Our newest members are Sean and Amanda Wuller, and Bryan Melvin. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.
Big Buck Classic Shoot: The 2009 Big Buck Classic shoot held at the Quest is now history. We were uncertain how well it would go, and we did turn a profit. After accounting for expenses and income, we cleared $5.56. I was out of town and wasn’t available to help at that shoot, but from the Pictures I saw it looked like a pretty neat setup. Bill Arledge is to be thanked for his effort designing the setup and obtaining all of the equipment needed to set up and run the shoot. Thanks go out to Steve Doty for his support in planning and running the shoot. This was Steve’s first effort at being a key player in running a shoot of this size and he did very well. Also we need to thank our club members that helped set up and tear down the shoot, and our members that helped with Registration and line judging… Thanks Matt, Mike, Steve, Dick, Ed, and all others. Since I wasn’t there. I know I missed someone. My apologies to those I didn’t mention. Next year the Big Buck Classic will be in January. We were asked to run a shoot next year, and were asked to make it a 3D shoot next time. After some discussion we decided to skip next year’s event, as January is when we hold our annual banquet, and we normally have two club shoots in January anyway that would be a lot less work. Adding the Big Buck Classic to that month might be a little much. We may pursue this event in future years, but next year looks like it won’t work out.
Volunteer Opportunities: Offutt Youth Program: The Offutt Youth Program has asked us to run an archery program for them again this year. To do this, we need people to open our range, get out our Genesis bows and our arrows, and teach classes to a youth group on the following dates: June 8, June 22, July 6, July 13, and July 27. The dates are all on Monday’s and the classes would be from 8:30 until about noon.
If you can assist with that, please contact Steve Williamson, or email me and I’ll pass the information on to Steve.
UNMC Opportunity The University of Nebraska Medical Center asked us to hold an archery program a while back for a group of Autistic kids, and have been asked to do that again. Those of us that helped for the last program enjoyed doing that a lot. They were highly functional kids and both the kids and helpers had a great time.
I for one will be assisting with this program. If you can help, the program will be on May 22, and May 23. May 22 is a Friday and that program will run from 7pm to 9pm (Steve, sign me up for that program). May 23 is a Saturday, and the program will be from 2pm to 4pm.
What we did last time, was start out by setting up tables and chairs for all, where we taught a brief class on what a bow and arrow is, how to shoot, and safety rules… stressing the safety rules. We then broke the kids up into groups of 4 or 5, and had them rotate through three stations, where the first was basic skills and shooting at the backstop with no targets. The second station was shooting at targets, and the third was shooting at balloons.
Omaha Royals Anyone? The Omaha Royals called us asking if we would be interested in a club outing. I think they are just drumming up business, but this could be fun. They said if we got a group together, we could get in at a discounted price of $6.00 and would get discounts on refreshments.
If you are interested in this, please email or call me and I’ll keep a list of those interested, and if enough are interested, I’ll follow up with Steve to get something going.
May 17 3D Shoot: Our first outdoor shoot of the year will be on May 17. There’s a couple of workparties scheduled for it.
One is on Friday the 15th, to load trailers. That shouldn’t be a large effort as we already have the targets stored at the outdoor range. We just need to load the tents, shooting steaks, tables, chairs, practice target butts, the grill, and a couple of other items.
The workparty to set up will be on Saturday the 16th. That workparty will start at 8am and will hopefully be done by noon. Once the range is set up, we let members register and shoot if they’d like to do that.
On Sunday, registration is from 8am to noon, and clean-up will start at about 2:30. We can leave the targets out until our next shoot, so clean-up shouldn’t be a large effort for this shoot.
Multi Club Shoot: Mike Vandeman will be representing our club at a multi-club meeting to discuss participation in a Rinehart 100 shoot. Reinhart provides the targets for this type of shoot, and it draws several hundred archers.
Current thoughts are that it would be held in Freemont, and that Ahamo, Lincoln, Golden Arrow, and Freemont would pull together to hold this shoot. The shoot might not be held till 2010. Watch for more information on it after the meeting is held.
Fontenelle Forest Hunt: Fontenelle Forest is looking to add new hunters to their special December hunt. To participate you need to call the Nature Center and ask to talk to Gary Garybrandt. There’s a limit to the number of hunters allowed to participate in the hunt, so call soon if you are thinking of participating.
The hunt is a doe only hunt and lasts from a Saturday till the end of the next weekend (9 days). There’s a $20 fee to participate. Participants can shoot bucks, but only after accumulating enough points. Points are accumulated by shooting does, by years hunted in this hunt, and by hours hunted. You will need to have taken a bowhunter education class, and pass a shooting test to be allowed participate. One perk this year, is that hunters will be allowed to shoot a turkey on the last day of the hunt.
If you have any specific questions on this hunt, call Gary Garabrandt.
Newsletter Items: If you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.
Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mailing address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.
Congratulations: Congratulations to Jason Wallace. He and Stacy are the proud parents of a new son named Hunter, born just a few days ago.
