May Club Meeting
The May meeting was held on May 5. There were 13 members in attendance. We discussed the class Bill Arledge held at the range, the Offutt youth program, the upcoming loss of our web site provider, outdoor Leagues starting up in May, and said good bye to Matt Turner, who has an overseas assignment and will be leaving us shortly.
New members:
There were no new memberships voted in at the May meeting.
New 3D Coordinator:
First of all… many thanks to Matt Turner and Troy Bryant for their excellent job coordinating our 3D shoots over the past year. Even though they were in the military, they found time to mark off our 3D range, coordinate our 3D work parties, and help run things. Troy is getting out of the service and moving to Texas and Matt is heading overseas… hoping to be back in time for hunting season.
Buck Knight has volunteered to coordinate our 3D’s for the rest of the year. Thank you Buck—and I’m sure you’ll do as good a job as Matt and Troy did.
Next Outdoor 3D:
Please note the date of our next 3D shoot—June 15. We’ll need plenty of help at that shoot—mainly to help tear everything down. We have been very fortunate for our first two shoots this year. The Archdiocese had given us permission to leave the targets out for those shoots. However, per our contract to use their facility for our shoots starting in June, we need to start bringing in all of the targets after each shoot.
To prepare for this, we changed they layout of the targets this year. We went to 4 8-target sets of targets and they are set up with just a little less walking than last year. When we set up the targets, we had 4 4-man teams, so everyone had to only carry out two targets. Matt and Troy had walked the range and set up flags for the target positions and the shooting stake positions. We were done setting up for the first shoot in about 2-hours. If we get that many, or even more people, tear down should be even quicker. Please make every effort to make it out on that Sunday. We should be able to start bringing in targets at about 1:30 or so and should be done before 4:00.
Offutt Youth Program:
There will be 3 archery youth programs held in June and July at our range. The plan is for 12 or 13 kids to be in each class. If you would like to help, please send me an email, get in touch with Steve Williamson, or be at our next club meeting.
The dates are June 23, July 14, and July 28. All are Mondays and the sessions start at 9am. Helpers will need to be there about an hour early to get things set up and organized. This could be a fun activity to support. If you want a chance to help introduce some kids to archery please volunteer to help.
Web Site News:
This isn’t the best of news… but our web site provider is getting out of the business at the end of the year and we will need to find a new provider. I haven’t been looking too hard just yet, but I do need to get started on this. If anyone has a line on a provider we could use please send me information on that. I’d like to get something locked down by the end of the summer.
May 3D:
The first 3D of the year had 85 shooters and we were expecting to go over that in May. I guess the weather was just too nice and archers were fishing or doing yard work on that Sunday. There were also 2 other shoots on the same dates as ours, and one bow fishing tournament. Plus gas has gone up quite a lot. We still had 50 shooters though and did come out ahead.
For those that shoot at that shot, and those that helped, it was a beautiful day for a shoot—and everyone had a great time.
Hopefully, the June shoot will have closer to the 85 number. If you can make it out to shoot on June 15th, plan on shooting and staying afterwards to help bring in targets. Since registration is over at noon, we should be able to start bring in targets behind the archers shooting shortly after that. Most of the work party activities will start at about 1:30… so if you are planning on just coming out to help tear down, please be there by 1:30. If you have a 4 wheeler and need to give it some exercise, please bring it out.
Outdoor Leagues:
It’s time for outdoor leagues to start. Mike Stanner is hosting Ahamo’s Outdoor Leagues at his house again this year. We shoot an American Round League, shooting from 40, 50, and 60 yards. League nights are on Tuesday and they start shortly after 6:00.
If we shoot the same format as last year, you don’t need to be there for each league night. Any Tuesday you are available just show up at Mike’s house by 6:30 and shoot along. There will be a fee set by the league and again, depending on the format we follow, there may be a payback at the end of the league.
Mike’s address is: 11222 Kentucky Road in Papillion. Contact Mike if you have any questions. His cell is 402 212-5615
Hunting News:
I’m sure there’s quite a few members that have harvested one or more turkey’s so far this year. I’d love to get pictures and stories for the newsletter. Please send them to me.
I only have one name for harvested turkeys so far this year. Doug Schmidt harvested one—congratulations Doug.
I also found out from Steve Doty at the last 3D that he went Hog hunting and harvested a pretty big one. Congratulations Steve.
Newsletter Items:
If you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.
Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mail address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.
News From Club Members:
Bob Taylor is looking for a 35 or 45 pound recurve bow. If you have one you would like to sell, please contact Bob. His number is 714-6319.
Lost and Found:
In the last couple of newsletters there has been news about members that have left equipment at the indoor range.
Please keep track of your things when at the range and be sure you have everything with you when you leave. If you happen to find something that isn’t yours, please get it to a board member, let me know, or bring it to a club meeting. It can be a very bad feeling to loose something like a release or tools.
More Club News:
To date we still haven’t heard any information on the Game and Parks request for a Grant we made. If that comes through we will be able to upgrade our indoor range and maybe replace the cardboard with back stops that are just a little more sturdy. Keep your fingers crossed and watch for news on this in future newsletters or club meetings. If it comes through, we will need to open our range to the public either weekly or monthly (I’m not sure of the frequency). However. It will give us an opportunity to recruit new members.
Steve Williamson reported that he found a club that is interested in our pop-up targets. We would need to sell them at a little bit of a loss, but we never did get the benefit out of them we were hoping for.
We still have plans to upgrade our bow press at the indoor range. We are planning to upgrade to get a press that can handle parallel limb bows.
A note on work-parties. We are nearing mid year and not all of our members are keeping up with their work party commitments this year. If you are behind there, please make an effort to help at our 3D’s scheduled for the rest of the year. We will be needing plenty of help setting up, tearing down, and running registration and the food at our outdoor shoots. We have only 3 shoots remaining this year; one in June, one in July, and one in August.
