March Club Meeting: The March meeting was held on March 2. We had 20 members in attendance. We mostly discussed the Wahoo Shoot along with some other key club items.
We also voted in 3 new memberships.
New members: There were three new memberships voted in at the March meeting. New memberships include John & Rebecca Stubblefield, William & Ranessa Lockhart, and Dennis Mitchell. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.
2009 Memberships: If you know any members that have not rejoined this year, please ask them for their key and give it to a board member. The keys have been changed for 2009, but we can retool the old keys to fit the new lock that will be installed next year.
3D Shoot News: Our February 8 indoor 3D was even better than our January shoot. We has 74 Shooters at the January shoot, and 96 shooters at the February shoot. Many thanks to all that helped set up and run these shoots.
The Winter Games were also successful. The target events had a decent turnout, but our 3D drew the most shooters with 70 shooting at Ahamo on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks again to the members that set up and helped run the Winter Games.
With Wahoo coming up on March 21 and 22, and the Ahamo Classic scheduled for April 17 through 19, we still have a busy schedule ahead of us.
Wahoo News:
Much of the following was presented in the February newsletter. Please review again and make plans to assist wherever you can. The Wahoo shoot is one that gets bigger each year, and many people look forward to attending this shoot. Past year’s attendance numbers follow: 2004 194 Shooters 2005 285 Shooters 2006 269 Shooters 2007 288 Shooters 2008 328 Shooters
As of March 6 there are over 200 pre-registered already, with a many more pre-registrations expected the last 2 weeks before the shoot.
All members are asked to help as much as they are able for this shoot. Even those with non-working memberships are asked to help if they can. We need as much help as can be provided to make this shoot a success.
Here’s what needs to be done: Cutting Trees: We have a tree cutting workparty on Saturday March 14 and will need plenty of muscle, and chain saws to cut the trees needed for the shoot. We will meet at 2-Rivers State Park at 8:00 am. This workparty will go on rain or shine so please be there if you are able. We will be cutting trees, loading trailers, and unloading them at Wahoo.
Setting up the range: We meet at the indoor range on Wednesday March 18 at 5pm to load targets and equipment needed for the shoot. Once loaded, we haul everything to Wahoo so it can be ready for set-up starting on Thursday.
Members start setting up Thursday at 9am and go till they’re ready to quit for the day. Call Brent Simmerman’s cell (630-6555) if you’re going out later that afternoon to see if they are still working and need help. Almost any time people can arrive is fine, as there is plenty to do. We put up trees, set up targets and stakes, set up bow racks, and much more.
Set-up continues Friday morning until done. Once all is set up, we allow members to register and shoot. This usually starts at 2:30 or 3:00 on Friday. This allows members that will be working throughout the weekend to shoot, plus it gives us a chance to test out the targets to be sure there won’t be any issues with how they are set up during the shoot on Saturday and Sunday.
Running the Shoot: On Saturday and Sunday, we need at least 5 members to be line judges for each of the shooting lines. This is because the shoot is spread out and we need to be sure the lines are clear before blowing the whistle to pull arrows, and to be sure all are back from pulling arrows before blowing the whistle to shoot.
Registration Help: We also need registration help. Registration is organized to be easy for anyone to help with. I run registration and am there all day both days to provide guidance to all that help. I need at least 5 people besides myself for each line. Several people are currently on the list to help, but there is still a need for more. Here are the times I still need to fill:
Saturday March 217:30amto 9:15am (1 more needed) Saturday March 2112:00pmto 2:15pm (3 more needed) SundayMarch 226:30amto 8:15am (0 more needed) SundayMarch 2211:00am to 1:15pm (1 more needed) SundayMarch 222:30pm to 4:00pm(2 more needed)
Please call me or email me if you can fill one or more of those slots. For those that helped in the past, I’m sure you’ll recall how easy it is to check off names from the pre-registration list, write names and target numbers on score cards, and pass everything to one person that collects the money. If you will be shooting on one of the lines, you can still help with registration for that line and leave a few minutes early to be ready to shoot.
If there are spouses, or children old enough to count money or check names off from the registration list they can help out. For some lines we could have over 100 people going through registration in about an hour.
Food: Akiye Rebarich is in charge of the food committee again this year. It is pretty much all in order and she has plenty of help. The food committee does need some desert items. The need is for brownies and rice krispy treats. If you can make any of these, please bring them out to Wahoo Friday or Saturday.
Clean-up: Clean-up starts at about 3:30 on Sunday. While the shoot takes 2 full days to set up, it takes about an hour and a half to tear down. It is much easier to carry targets to trailers, and throw trees onto a truck than positioning them for the shoot.
Once clean up is completed we have one final workparty on Monday the 23rd at 5:00 at the indoor range to unload the trailers.
I’m sure all of you that have helped in the past, know the feeling of accomplishment we all have when all the work is done and we discuss feedback we received from hundreds of archers talking about how well our shoot was run.
Ahamo Classic Shoot:
While Wahoo has an almost immediate need, there is also an upcoming shoot that will give our club even more exposure to the public. Visit the website NebraskaBigBuckClassic.com for information on the shoot, and watch for times and date information in the next newsletter.
Steve Doty and Bill Arledge will be running this shoot and will need help setting it up and running it. It won’t be quite as much work as Wahoo, but the difference is that the Ahamo Classic will be run for 3 days. There will be 2 lines on Friday, 4 on Saturday, and 2 on Sunday.
Help will be needed for set-up, running the lines, running registration, and to tear down afterwards. Watch for dates and times in next Month’s newsletter.
Other Club News: Mike Nickels found a contact to supply us with cardboard to replace the cardboard in our indoor range backstop. The cardboard at the indoor range is getting pretty soft, and needs to be replaced. Once we get the cardboard to the indoor range, we will be planning a workparty to get it cut and installed. This workparty may not be for a while though, as our immediate need is to get past Wahoo, and then the Ahamo Classic shoot at the Quest Center.
Newsletter Items: If you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.
Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mailing address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.
