June Club Meeting

The June meeting was held on June 2. There were 7 members in attendance. It was a very short meeting. We primarily discussed the upcoming 3D and workparties needed for that shoot.

New members:

There were 2 new memberships voted in at the June meeting. Our newest members are Nick Spotanski, and Jason and Stacy Wallace; welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.

Wahoo News:

At the June club meeting Steve said he heard more information on the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) shoot that had been a possibility for our club to host during the same weekend as the Wahoo shoot next year. We were told some of the specifics on that shoot and it appears that we will not be able to manage it. We were told that we need room for 300 spectators at the shoot, 40 shooting lanes, and space for vendors. The building we would have been able to use for that shoot would not accommodate any of those requirements.

The bad news is that we will not be getting the additional income that would bring in for the club, but the good news is that we will not need to plan on supplying workers, bow racks and other equipment, and will not need to set up and tear down that shoot.

The Wahoo shoot is such a large undertaking for our club, that I for one, am a little relieved.

Hunting News:

Here is some information I found on the Nebraska Game and Parks Website. It has some interesting information on laws, permits, fees, and draw dates:

Draw Dates: The Gifford area will again draw for a limited number of permits. The Application period is July 15 to August 15.

In 2008, archery permits will include a free bonus anterless tag. Fees for deer tags in 2008 are $28.00. A habitat stamp is also needed along with your deer tag and costs $16.00. There is also a $1.00 processing fee.

The following are hunting regulations that may be of interest:

Use of Radios: It is unlawful to use two-way radios or any other electronic devices to transmit information about the location of any game to or from a conveyance of any type (including vehicles, aircraft, boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, etc.).

Baiting: It is unlawful to take mountain sheep, elk, deer, or antelope within 200 yards of a site upon which feed, feed or mineral supplement, or bait has been placed within the previous 60 days. This does not include placement of food or food/mineral supplement in the active operation of husbandry for domesticated livestock other than domesticated cervidae (family that deer belong to). It does not prevent the take of animals on or near planted food plots. It does not allow adjacent landowners to bait an area and prevent the take of animals on property owned by others.

Hunter Orange: Nebraska State Law requires hunters to wear and visibly display at least 400 square inches of hunter orange on their head, back and chest AT ALL TIMES when hunting antelope, deer, elk or bighorn sheep with a firearm or muzzleloader during firearm or muzzleloader seasons. Camouflage hunter orange patterns are legal. Archers need not meet this requirement during muzzleloader seasons, but are encouraged to do so. If hunting in a blind it is advisable to display hunter orange on the outside of the blind.

Checking: Each deer must be delivered by the permit holder to an official check station. Archery deer must be checked within 72 hours of the time of kill, but no later than 1 p.m. on Nov. 14 for deer taken during the first portion of the season or 1 p.m. Jan. 2 for deer taken during the late archery season.

Hunter education: Hunters ages 12 through 29 must have on their person proof of successful completion of Firearm Hunter Education while hunting with either a firearm or crossbow. Hunters ages 12 through 29 hunting deer, antelope, elk or mountain (bighorn) sheep with bow and arrow must carry proof of successful completion of Bow Hunter Education.

Apprentice Hunter Education Exemption Certificate: Hunters ages 12 through 29 who have not completed a Firearm Hunter and/or Bow Hunter Education course and want to give hunting a try may obtain an Apprentice Hunter Education Exemption Certificate from the Commission. This exemption is to provide the novice hunter an opportunity to try hunting and receive training from an experienced hunter prior to making the commitment of completion of the required hunter education training, so a hunter using this certificate must be accompanied at all times while hunting. This certificate may only be obtained once in each person’s lifetime, expires on Dec. 31 of the year obtained and may be renewed once. The fee is $5.00.

Offutt Youth Program:

There will be 3 archery youth programs held in June and July at our range. The plan is for 12 or 13 kids to be in each class. If you would like to help, please send me an email, get in touch with Steve Williamson, or be at our next club meeting.

The dates are June 23, July 14, and July 28. All are Mondays and the sessions start at 9am. Helpers will need to be there about an hour early to get things set up and organized. This could be a fun activity to support. If you want a chance to help introduce some kids to archery please volunteer to help.

3D News:

Here’s some counts from our Outdoor3D shoots so far this year. April 13, 85 shooters; May 18, 51 shooters; June 15, 51 shooters.

We have shoots planned for July 13, and August 24; with the August 24 shoot also being the Nebraska State Unmarked 3D shoot tournament.

As of June, we are required to bring in all of our targets after each shoot. This went surprisingly well at the June shoot. Thanks go out to all that came out to help with that shoot. Set-up was easy because all of the targets were left up after the May 3D, but tear down took only about an hour and a half. In fact, it went too quickly and I had to refund money to archers that could not finish because we removed targets before they were able to shoot them. We will need to watch that more closely next time.

A special thanks to Jen for running the food tent for us at the last shoot, and to everyone that brought their 4-wheelers out on Sunday to help tear down the range.

At the July shoot, and the August shoot; we will need to both set-up and tear down all of the targets—so please note both the July date (July 13) and the August date (Aug 24). We will need a lot of help to both set-up and tear down at both of those shoots. I expect that set up will start at 8am for those shoots on Saturday, and tear down at 1:00 on Sunday.

We will need 4-wheelers on both Saturday and on Sunday; so if you can bring yours, please do. We will also need weed trimmers on Saturday.

Next Newsletter:

Because of vacation plans and limited news, there will not be a newsletter in July. There may be email notifications and phone calls for workparties, but there won’t be a newsletter.

Outdoor Leagues:

To date, no one has been showing up for outdoor leagues. Partly due to lack of interest, and partly due to weather. If you want to shoot outdoors at 40, 50, and 60 yards, please call Mike Stanner in advance. He would be happy to shoot along with you at his house—and he has a target you can shoot at. Until enough people commit to shoot, Mike said he won’t be setting up all of the targets like he has in the past.

Call Mike at 402 212-5615 if you would like to shoot at his house on a Tuesday. His address is: 11222 Kentucky Road in Papillion. Contact Mike if you have any questions.

Newsletter Items:

If you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.

Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mail address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.
