January Club Meeting The January meeting was our annual banquet held at the Upstream Brewery. I’m sure all that were there agreed, a good time was had by all. We gave out awards, presented new officers for 2009, discussed club accomplishments for 2008, drew for door prizes, watched a video of 2008 activities, ate some great food, and voted to return to the same location next year.
New members There were three new memberships voted in at the annual banquet. Since none of the new members were there to pay dues, I’ll hold mentioning names until we collect dues and give them their keys.
Annual Banquet News:
A lot happened at the annual banquet. One key item was that most officers agreed to remain in their current positions, and new board positions were identified.
Mike Vandeman is our new Ahamo Tournament Director. We changed the title from 3D Coordinator and I’m sure Mike will do an outstanding job.
We also created a position as Nebraska Big Buck Classic Coordinator. Steve Doty will take on that role and will work with Bill Arledge to coordinate that shoot for our club this year.
Another new board member is Mike Nickels, who will be our Indoor Range Coordinator, taking care of our indoor range throughout the year.
Outgoing officers are thanked for their service to the club. Aaron Good did an outstanding job taking care of our indoor range in 2008, and did a great job patching walls and preparing for the fresh coat of paint we gave the range.
Buck Knight stepped in as our 2008 3D coordinator when Troy left for Texas and Matt Turner was assigned overseas. Buck did a great job to keep our 3D shoots organized and running smooth.
Special Awards: Big Buck Award: The 2008 Big Buck award went to Doug Schmidt. Doug’s deer was measured as a respectable 137 4/8 after deductions. Congratulations go out to Doug.
Outstanding Service Award: Our 2008 Outstanding Service Award went to two of our members; Brent Simmerman and Buck Knight.
Brent has done an exemplary job as our club treasurer since taking that job on about 5 years ago. Brent is at all of our meetings giving us his financial reports, takes care of all of our bills, does everything asked of him with a smile, and has managed our books perfectly. Brent is well deserving of this award.
Buck Knight was also recognized for his work throughout the year. He did a great job coordinating our 3D shoots, was always there with his 4-wheeler policing the range and hauling targets and water, and is currently rebuilding our club’s trailer.
Life Member Award: The Ahamo Life Member award is one that is not frequently given. The Board of Directors needs to agree that the member receiving this award has performed outstanding service for our club. In addition, we present this award to members that we selfishly do not want to lose.
Steve, presented this award to Dick Sousa. Dick has been our Club President, and our Vice President for several years now. He has coordinated our Wahoo Shoot since it’s start 5 years ago, and does a great job contacting members along with Ed Rebarich as the two of them make up our calling committee. This was an award that all of us were pleased to present.
After Dick was presented the Life Member Award, a second such award was presented to Steve Williamson. The Board caucused behind Steve’s back and all agreed that this was an award that was well deserved. Steve has been our President for 4 years now; something that is unprecedented. He unselfishly travels between cities promoting our club and obtaining sponsors for the Wahoo shoot. He also has been responsible for a lot of the clean-up activities at the indoor range, obtaining the new bow press and bow tuning equipment, and is the best goodwill ambassador the club has ever had. In fact we were very pleased and amazed when Steve agreed to hold the office of President for 2009.
Congratulations and many thanks go out to Dick and to Steve for their outstanding service to the Ahamo Archery Club.
Club Deer Awards: The list of members that have harvested deer follows. If your name isn’t there and should be or if your information isn’t correct please let me know. We handed out awards to all who were at the banquet that harvested deer. Congratulations go out to Buck for harvesting 6 doe and a nice 4x4 this season.

Note on Club Web Site: The club website continues to be updated. Check out the new Wahoo page.
Upcoming Shoots: There is a 3D scheduled for Sunday January 18 and Sunday February 8. Set up will be held on the Saturday prior to each of the shoots. Workparty times are 1:00 on Saturday, with members being able to register and shoot immediately after set-up. This is to allow those that will be working the shoot on Sunday, or cannot make it to the shoot, to be able to shoot if they would like to.
Wahoo Note: The next Wahoo meeting is on Tuesday, January 20 at Lansky’s in Bellevue (370 and 36th Street). Everyone’s presence is welcome as we plan for this shoot and discuss what has been done already. Our members put a lot of effort into making the shoot a success, and everyone that participates is rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing they played a key role in setting up and running this shoot. Don’t be left out. The meeting starts at 7:00, with members that wish to eat, getting there at about 6:30 to order.
As we said before, and will say again, this is the largest endeavor our club takes on. The success of this shoot is needed to provide the funds necessary to keep our club in the black each year. All members are needed to help at this shoot.
I run registration and need 5 to 6 people to help for each shooting line, and also at the end of the shoot to collect cards. Shifts are Saturday 7:30 am to 9:15, and 12:00 to 1:15; and Sunday 6:30 am to 8:15, 11:00 to 1:15, and from 2:30 to 4:00. If you can help at any of these times it’s not too early to let me know.
During the shoot, we will also need about 5 line judges for each shooting line.
The above help is just during the shoot. Prior to, we will need help from Wednesday till Friday to load targets and set up. Plus we have a tree cutting work party a week before the shoot. Then after the shoot we need help taking the range down and unloading trailers at the indoor range. Sounds like a lot of work, but with a large group of members, the work parties go pretty fast.
