February Club Meeting
The February meeting was held on February 2. We had 23 members in attendance. A lot was discussed. We have shoots coming up on Feb 8, Feb 21 and 22, March 21 and 22, and on April 17 to 19. We discussed each of those shoots, set workparty times, voted in 8 new memberships, and had other discussions.

New members
There were three new memberships voted in at the annual banquet that paid their dues at our January 18 shoot. New memberships include Stephen and Nancy Davis, Corey Woods, and Jeff Harter. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.

In addition, we voted in 8 new members at the February meeting. These memberships included; Tony Tran and Loan Nguyen, Rod and Linda Moeller, Mike and Tammy Palm, Jeff and Dee Barrett, Frank Jensen, and Mike and Sandra Mace, Jason and Erika Strunk, and Jennifer Romero-Davis. Welcome all to the Ahamo Archery Club.

 2009 Memberships:
If you haven’t paid your dues for 2009, you have until the March meeting to do that or this is your last newsletter. In addition, if you have not yet paid your dues, your 2008 key no longer works. We change the locks each year, and you need to pay your dues to get a new key.

Members that joined Ahamo in 2008, paid for a full year when joining, and should note that their dues for 2009 are due in January but are pro-rated downward depending on when they joined in 2008. Call Brent or send him an email if you have questions on your dues (phone 597-9497, email BRENT.SIMMERMAN@COX.NET).

If you are not rejoining, please turn in your old key. You can do that at any of our shoots, or pass it on to a current member that can turn it in for you. We can retool old keys for next year.

Membership entitles members to discounts at our club shoots, a key to the indoor range, camaraderie with other members, and a chance to participate in some great work parties with other club members.

We also have a pretty good end of year banquet that members are invited to participate in.

3D Shoot News:
Our January 18 indoor 3D was a huge success. We had 74 shooters and plenty of help at our workparties. Note that we have one more indoor 3D scheduled for February 8. Setup will be Saturday the 7th at 1:00 pm. Note that we allow members to register and shoot immediately after set-up. That went really well at the January 18 shoot. We had 8 members shooting and it was a lot of fun. We all started at the same time, and were able to shoot a nice relaxing round.

Winter Games 3D:
The Winter Games are on February 21 and 22. You can pre-register and shoot at one or multiple events. Ahamo is hosting the 3D part of the games, Woods and Waters is hosting a Vegas Round, and Golden Arrow is hosting a 300 round.

We have a workparty scheduled to start at 5pm on Friday, February 20. The 3D will be shot on both Saturday and Sunday. Note that registration is from 8am to noon on Saturday, and 8am to 11 on Sunday. You can register at our club for the 3D part of the shoot.

Wahoo News:
The Wahoo shoot is our club’s premier shoot of the year. All members are asked to help as much as they are able for this shoot. Even those with non-working memberships are asked to help if they can. We need as much help as can be provided to make this shoot a success.

Here’s what needs to be done:
Cutting Trees: We have a tree cutting workparty on Saturday March 14 and will need plenty of muscle, and chain saws to cut the trees needed for the shoot. Watch for the time and location to meet in the March Newsletter.

Setting up the range: We meet at the indoor range on Wednesday March 18 at 5pm to load targets and equipment needed for the shoot. Once loaded, we haul everything to Wahoo so it can be ready for set-up starting on Thursday.

Members start setting up Thursday at about 9am and go till late Thursday night. Any time people can arrive is fine, as there is plenty to do. We put up trees, set up targets and stakes, set up bow racks, and much more.

Set-up continues Friday morning until done. Once all is set up, we allow members to register and shoot. This usually starts at 2:30 or 3:00 on Friday. This allows members that will be working throughout the weekend to shoot, plus it gives us a chance to test out the targets to be sure there won’t be any issues with how they are set up during the shoot on Saturday and Sunday.

Running the Shoot: On Saturday and Sunday, we need at least 5 members to be line judges for each of the shooting lines. This is because the shoot is spread out and we need to be sure the lines are clear before blowing the whistle to pull arrows, and to be sure all are back from pulling arrows before blowing the whistle to shoot.

We also need registration help. Registration is organized to be easy for anyone to help with. If there are spouses, or children old enough to count money or check names off from the registration list they can help out. For some lines we have about 100 people going through registration in about an hour. At least 5 people, and up to 7 can help out here. Let me know if you or your family members can help out. I work each of the lines, and am there for any questions from the archers or those helping out.

Clean-up: Clean-up starts at about 3:30 on Sunday. While the shoot takes 2 full days to set up, it takes about an hour and a half to tear down. It is much easier to carry targets to trailers, and throw trees onto a truck than positioning them for the shoot.

Once clean up is completed we have one final workparty on Monday the 23rd to unload the trailers at the indoor range. This workparty starts at about 5pm.

Ahamo Classic Shoot:
Bill Arledge gave an overview of what kind of support he and Steve Doty will need for this shoot. It will be quite an undertaking for Ahamo, especially since it is right on the heels of the Wahoo shoot. We were given a fairly large place to hold our shoot at no cost to us, and hopefully we will make some money while promoting our club.

The shoot will be held at the Nebraska Big Buck Classic in April at the Quest Center. Archers will be able to register to shoot once, or multiple times, and can shoot at either the paper animal targets, the multi colored Vegas style targets, or both.

You can find information on the event at NebraskaBigBuckClassic.com… you can even go to our shoot schedule on line and click on the Nebraska Big Buck Classic wording to connect directly to the site.

We will need help setting up for the shoot—watch for dates and times in the newsletter when the shoot gets closer. There will be target mats to set up, plywood to set up around the range to protect the walls. Bow racks to set up, lighting, shooting lines and more. Bill and Steve will also need help with registration and with running the shoot.

Club Member Request:
Steve Doty is looking for an outfitter for an Antelope hunt this fall. If any club members have a line on one please let Steve know. He is looking for something in South Dakota, Wyoming, or even Colorado that isn’t too costly.

You can reach Steve at his email address (doty72@msn.com), or his phone (850-7681). You can also contact me through our web site’s Contact Us link and I’ll pass it on.

Missing Bow Strings:
Bill Arledge could not find the bow strings in one of our storage cabinets for the recurve bows stored there. If anyone has an idea where they might be, please let Bill know. We need those bows for our Joad program.

They’re probably somewhere at the indoor range, but we could not find them.

Club Volunteer Activity:
Steve Williamson coordinated an activity to teach archery to a number of High School kids from a program run by the Nebraska Medical Center. If you are on our email list, you probably got a request to help out. For those that did assist, we had a great time. The kids were very receptive to us and were much more coordinated than we anticipated.

I took some pictures, but cannot publish them, as we need a release from the Medical Center to put them on our web site or newsletter. Since I don’t have a release now, I anticipate just adding the pictures to our annual club video. They were pretty neat pictures of our members teaching and assisting the students.

Other Club News:
The pop machine has been fixed. We had someone look at it and we were able to get it fixed for around $100.

Also, we are trying to track down a source for cardboard so we can replace it at the indoor range. If you have a source let one of the board members know. Watch for a future workparty request to remove and replace our backstop.

Newsletter Items:
If you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.

Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mailing address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.
