April Club Meeting
The April meeting was held on April 5 with 19 members in attendance. We discussed the final Wahoo shoot news, club rules and the club constitution, future shoots, and other club issues. We also voted in 4 new memberships.

New Members
We voted in four new memberships at our April meeting. Our newest memberships are Louis Alvarez and Maricela, Craig & Melissa Stricherz, Jason & Sarah Aschenbrenner, and John & Tracey Sarvis. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.

Letter from Ahamo's President

Dear fellow members,
Recently the board had a meeting to discuss various topics. One of the topics was the level of participation of the membership supporting our various activities, chiefly shoots we sponsor. Historically participation has been low with only a few persons actually showing up to do all the work for these events. But I must commend the membership for the recent Wahoo 3D shoot. A majority of our membership pitched in and helped as they could. I thank each of you for that support and I commend those that took the leadership responsibility for this event.

We have other opportunities for participation coming up, our outdoor shoots coming up in May, the R100 Shoot near Lincoln coming up in July and periodic range needs that can happen. All of these will need assistance to be successful. And I remind the members that elected to be ‘working members’ you have a minimum of participation to achieve to meet those requirements. Please try to honor the commitment you made as a working member. I would be remiss not to mention that if you do some special tasks for the benefit of the organization, such as clean up the indoor range as an example, please inform a board member of that activity. Also there is, or is to be, a clipboard sheet at the indoor range to report your contribution.

We are in the process of reviewing the constitution to see what if any updates are needed to make the document governing the operation of this organization current. More will be coming of that matter later in the year.

Also, I invite you to join other members at the monthly meetings held at the indoor range. This is your opportunity to voice your ideas about the operation of this organization. We all have an equal voice in managing this organization, please share yours. Additionally, I invite you to participate in any of our events. You will find, as I have found, that it is a lot of fun sharing time with our fellow members.

Finally thanks for joining Ahamo and I look forward to your continued support.

Sincerely,
Jerry

Ahamo Constitution

Believe it or not, our club has a constitution. It was written and revised a few times in the past, and is now slightly out of date. A board meeting was held last month to discuss several club issues, with the constitution brought up during that meeting. It was decided that we should review and update that constitution and make it available to all members to review.

I believe that in the past we had printed copies for all new members, but ceased that practice due to cost and effort to print and distribute.

Dave Holthouse has volunteered to review and hold meetings to update it as needed. If you would like to participate in that effort, let me know, or be at our next club meeting as we discuss this further.

Once the Constitution is updated, I will be posting it on our internet site so it can be reviewed. The constitution states our club’s purpose, and the laws we govern our club by.

Club Rules

Recently we found some empty beer cans at the indoor range. Not permitting alcohol at the indoor range is a club rule that has been around for a long time. However, it actually isn't published anywhere.

Along with updating the constitution, we discussed developing a set of Club Rules and making them available to club members. This would be separate from the Club Constitution, but could be mentioned in the Constitution so that the rules could be updated without updating the constitution. We discussed posting them at the indoor range, handing them out to new members, and making them an attachment to the constitution.

A couple of us drew up a set of rules to use as a discussion point to either finalize as written or update as needed.

I’ll list them here for discussion only. Please review and be prepared to discuss at our next club meeting.

Ahamo Archery Club General Club Rules
(for discussion Purposes)

  • No alcohol at the indoor or outdoor range
  • No smoking at the indoor range
  • No shooting at club 3D targets without board member approval

Violation of club rules could result in forfeiting your membership to the Ahamo Archery Club, or assessment of additional dues to remain a club member.

Nebraska Hunting Law Changes
The Nebraska Game and Parks website has some good information in it. Some changes to hunting laws for 2010 can be found in the Big Game Hunting Guide posted there.

New for 2010:

  • October Anterless Season is 10 days, includes wider area and a $10 permit
  • Earn-a-Buck requires doe checked in before buck in Elkhorn and Wahoo units
  • Whitetail Statewide Buck permit valid in three seasons, includes anterless only whitetail bonus tag
  • Bonus anterless whitetail tags added to seven firearm units
  • Five new Season Choice Area units added
  • Nine days added to January firearm anterless season
  • Three new anterless seasons at Boyeer Chute and Desoto Bend national wildlife refuges
  • Archery equipment valid on firearm permits
  • Minimum draw weight for archery removed
  • Muzzleloading pistols legal
  • Archers, muzzleloaders and late season hunters Must use Telecheck
  • A $5 youth permit for residents and nonresidents

Other key laws and dates I found are:

  • Archery hunting in season choice areas is allowed January 1-18 (antlerless only)
  • The regular archery season is Sept 15—Nov 12, and Nov 22—Dec 31
  • There is an October anterless season Oct 2-11 for any weapon
  • The November firearm season is Nov 13—21
  • Muzzleloader season Dec 1-31
  • State law requires hunters to wear and visibly display at least 400 square inches of hunter orange when hunting big game with a firearm or muzzloader during firearm or muzzleloader seasons. Camouflage hunter orange patterns are legal. Archers are exempt from this requirement during muzzleloader seasons. Hunter orange is not required of archers during the October Anterless season.

May Shoot
Our next shoot will be an outdoor 3D on May 23. Before that shoot there will be a workparty opportunity on May 22nd at 8am. Since this is our first outdoor shoot for 2010 there could be a bit of work involved as we get back in the swing of setting up and tearing down targets and equipment.

Mike Palm and Mike Vandeman will be pre-walking the course to get the set-up planning done before we have our set-up workparty. It should be pretty well organized for those showing up to help on Saturday.

Please come out to help for that workparty. The range is at 245th and Q and is pretty easy to find. If you need directions, you can find them on our web site in the link “Outdoor Range Location”.

There will also be a workparty to bring in the targets on Sunday that will start at around 1:30 or 2:00. Please come out to help with that workparty also.

An additional note, after set-up Saturday, if it isn't too late and we aren’t too worn out, members can register and shoot a day early.

Newsletter Items
WIf you have a hunting picture or story, please send it to me, I’d like to put it in the newsletter. If you have an item for sale, send me the information to put in the newsletter as well.

Please email me anything you would like to add to the newsletter, or contact me for my mailing address. You can even give me your article at a club meeting.

Reinhart 100
Some of the local clubs have volunteered to help put on the Reinhart 100 shoot in July, and Ahamo is one of them. Reinhart will be providing the targets and will need help setting up and running the shoot.

One of the things we need to do is run concessions for the 2 days the shoot is running (July 10 and 11 I think). We will be looking for help as the date gets closer. Please consider helping.

Final Note
My apologies to Mike Palm. I didn’t start on the newsletter till this past week and found a note from the meeting about Mike needing help with an event at Bass Pro Shops on April 17 and 18. The newsletter is getting out too late to ask for help at that event. I’m sorry about that Mike.
