September 13 Club Meeting News
Club Meeting highlights
The September meeting was attended by 10 members. We discussed a meeting held by the rent committee, purchasing items for the club from the Cabellas shoot proceeds, the past and upcoming 3D seasons, and the youth program.
New Members
There were two new members voted in at the meeting; Dave Evans, and Brian Whitacre: Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.
Key Dates to Remember
Tuesdays: Indoor Leagues (starting 9/28) Oct 4 : Club Meeting (7:00)
Indoor Leagues Starting:
That’s right, it’s time for indoor leagues. Come on down and bring a friend. The first night of leagues will be Tuesday September 28. Shooting will start at around 7:00. Leagues are fun, they keep you in shooting form during the hunting season, and they get you in shape for tournaments.
Hunting season news
For those of us that count down from one hunting season till the next, the wait is over. Club members and the newsletter are anxiously awaiting for news of successful hunters. If you harvest an animal, please let your newsletter editor know. I also welcome any hunting stories anyone wants to give me. Pictures can also be put in the newsletter if you give them to me. Call me or send me an Email at: hunterlee@msn.com.
Note that I purchased a Gifford permit about 2 weeks before the season started and my number is 40. I’m hoping that a reduced number of hunters out there will make hunting more relaxing and the deer easier to find.
Big Buck Contest
Ahamo will be holding another Big Buck contest this year. As in the past, the bucks will be judged on green scores so that they can be scored by the January meeting. Bring your 1999 rack to a club meeting or contact Lee Pereksta to score it.
3D News:
The outdoor 3D season is over. Many thanks to Jack and Dustin White for coordinating the shoots this year. Special thanks also go out to Bobbi Boze for handling the food at the shoots this year. I’m sure those three are pretty much burned out after all the work they did at the outdoor range and the indoor range in 1999. If anyone has aspirations to be a super hero for the next outdoor season please consider one of those positions.
Thank you’s also go out to all members that gave so much of their time setting up, running registration, helping with food, and all of the other work that went into the season this year. Without the 3D shoots we would not be able to keep our club financially solvent from year to year.
Thoughts for next year
There was some discussion at the September meeting on next year’s 3D season. Thoughts included the possibility of a 20 target range for practice only and a separate 30 target range for those that want to shoot competitively. If you have any thoughts on making our shoots more fun and also to draw more shooters, please discuss them with a board member.
Rent Committee Report
The rent committee met last month. Thanks go out to Bob Hacker for hosting it. The committee had a very productive meeting and are very close to a proposal to present to the building owner. There was a lot of serious discussion about what we could afford, what will be fair to the owner, and cost saving measures. I can’t disclose the pending proposals until they are more solidified, but be aware that the committee is at work.
3D Door Prize Thanks
Thanks to those that donated door prizes for our Bowhunter Rendezvous shoot. Those donating included:
Woods and Waters Full Draw Archery Jensen Tire Village Inn (by Oakview)My apologies to anyone that donated that I was not aware of. If there are any others please let me know so they can be recognized in the next newsletter.
Next Club Meeting Activity
Bill Arledge said he was planning on a short meeting followed by a seminar on Basic Bow Tuning and String Repair at the next club meeting. If it goes well there may be other seminars at future meetings also.
Youth Archery Program
Bill Arledge said the Youth program will be run a little differently this year. Bill wants to give the youth some serious (but fun) lessons. Bill is a master instructor and wants to use that talent to develop some good archery talent. There will be a fee increase this year for the youth program. The initial proposal is for a $10.00 initiation fee and a $5.00 a night fee to participate. There will also be a $2.00 equipment rental fee if equipment is needed. Note though that children of members will have the initiation fee waived and will not need to pay for equipment rental.
The children's program will be held at 9:00 AM on Saturdays starting the first Saturday in October. If you have any questions, please contact Bill Arledge.
In addition, Bill does need volunteers to help him run the youth program. Please contact him if you can help.
Thanks to the YMCA
Ahamo is very appreciative of the YMCA for their letting us use their camp again this year. There was some discussion of how to show our appreciation. We discussed several options but did not agree on what would be best. We decided to table it so the board could discuss this issue and present a recommendation to the club.
Please keep your club clean
The indoor range has been left kind of messy lately. If you use it and find a mess on the floor (from shooting or miscellaneous trash), please sweep or pick up the range. It’s your range - please help keep it clean.
Editorial from your President
It’s Wake up Time
This article is intended to draw your attention to the status of the club. That is why I am calling it “Wake up Time”. As I see it the status of the club and the lack of participation by the majority of the club members - I have to ask myself why do I do this. And you know what? The other people who do the brunt of the work are asking themselves the same thing. to make it even more clear, I ask you if those 8 -10 people did not do almost all of the work all the time how could the club exist. Example - we all know that the majority of the club income is generated from tournaments both 3D and Target. Now let us suppose Ed, Mike, Bill R. , John, Bob, Steve, Bobbi, Dave did not show up to set up and run the tournament what would “you” as the tournament chairperson “Do”? Get my point.
We are tired, considering our age is approaching “50” and we have been doing most of the work for years. What is your excuse.
I know we no longer have a work requirement, but everyone knows the work does not get done by itself. I also know that we publish rosters of all of our scheduled events and I cannot see why each family unit cannot have one representative to help with at least 1 event - and 2 would be great. This does not mean you would have to help set up or run the event. We need others to work behind the scenes for both setup and preparation, club advertisement, collecting door prizes, ideas, planning, and so forth.
Recently I have been asking myself do I expect too much, are we too aggressive in the number of events we do? And I frankly ask myself is it worth it? Frankly, part of me says no, but my heart is in this sport we call archery and I have the opportunity to fellowship with others while enjoying this sport be it work parties or enjoying the event. I also believe with all my heart that the Ahamo Archery Club is and can continue to be an excellent outlet to relax and enjoy all forms of the sport; let alone the fellowship.
But again let us be frank. Without more participation from the majority of the members I can see the Ahamo Archery Club becoming non-existent. Especially if those 8-10 people no longer do the bulk of the work. so I ask - which way do you want it.
- Bill Arledge
