October 5 Club Meeting News
Club Meeting highlights
The October meeting was attended by 27 members. We discussed indoor leagues, JOAD, and the proposal to form a joint association with other clubs to share the indoor range. There was one new member voted in at the meeting. Gary Brunberg won the incentive drawing for $31.00.
New Members
The newest member of our club is Terry Hansen. Welcome to the Club Terry.

3D News
Many thanks to Jack and Dustin White. They are our 1999 3D coordinators. As coordinators they will be responsible for making sure that the the range is set up properly for each 3D shoot and that the range is picked up after each shoot. Jack and Dustin have both put in many hours helping with our 1998 3D shoots so we know the 1999 shoots are in good hands.
We are still looking for a volunteer to coordinate registration and food for the 1999 3D season. If you would like to help out with registration and food, please call Bill Arledge.
Indoor Leagues
Indoor leagues are going strong. About 20 shooters are participating. There is still room for more if you would like to join - or even if you would like to come down and shoot along with the league. Shooting starts at around 7:00 every Tuesday night.
Plans for the next Club Meeting
At our last Club meeting we had a swap meet. Several members brought down equipment to sell and it seemed to go really well. In fact several members asked if we could do this on a regular basis.
Bill Arledge said we will be holding club ‘swap meets’ once a quarter at our meetings. We will announce them in advance in the newsletter. If anyone wants to bring down equipment to sell at any meeting, you are welcome to bring any tackle down you want to sell. However, official swap meets will be once a quarter.
We haven’t been doing very well getting planned speakers to attend our meetings. There often seems to be conflicts at the last minute. However, Bill Arledge said he will be the speaker at our next meeting and will be discussing how to tie a serving in the field (in case your serving breaks while hunting).
YMCA News
Bill Arledge and Ed Rebarich delivered the bows and arrows we purchased for the YMCA this past month. We asked if there was anything else we could do to help out as a thank you for letting us use the property for our 3D shoots. It was suggested we put on a demonstration for the YMCA. The owner is also putting together a list of things we might do to help them out.
Hunting Season News
Hunting Season is now here. Please contact Ed Rebarich or Lee Pereksta when you get any deer this year so we can add you to the list of those that will receive deer awards. If you get a buck and want to enter it in the big buck contest bring your rack to a club meeting to be measured. Members that have harvested animals this year are listed below:
Successful 1998 Season Hunters Steve Murphy 6x6 elk Rich Chandler Antelope Mike Sonderman doe Chris Stokes doe John Gregory 4x4 Lee Pereksta 3x4The YMCA said that someone may be hunting at the outdoor range. Note that this is not permitted. If a club member is caught hunting there, the board has the authority to revoke his membership.
Thanks from Fontenelle Forest
Ahamo loaned Fontenelle Forest a 3D target to use for their hunting qualifier. Gary Brunberg reported that we were thanked for our support.
Ahamo Annual Banquet
Plans are currently underway for the annual banquet. It will be in January again this year. We would like to hold it at at a social hall or something similar and have it catered. If anyone has an idea for a location please contact Bill Rhoades.
1999 Club Officers
Be thinking about who you want for club officers for 1999. The ballot box will be put out at the indoor range for nominations. Think about who would make good officers for our club.
Found...
John Terfone left his binoculars at the indoor range and had them returned by Nate Brown. He asked that Nate be thanked in the newsletter for finding and returning them. Thank you Nate..
JOAD
Joad started in October. The cost is $2.00 per child and is held Thursday nights at 7:00. There is plenty of room, so if your child wants to learn archery this is an excellent opportunity to have him or her learn it the right way. The club has equipment at the range for JOAD shooters if your child doesn’t have his or her own.
Indoor Range Proposal
The proposal for the sharing of our indoor range with other clubs was discussed at a meeting with the Golden Arrow club on October 6. Golden Arrow had discussed it with their membership and the consensus was that it was not a good idea at this time to go in with us.
The rent we currently pay will be increasing by 15% next year again and we will need to renegotiate our rent the year after that. So far we have been able to hold our own, but we are reaching the point where we will no longer be able to afford to stay where we are. Golden Arrow was afraid that if they went in with us, we would soon be in a hole that both clubs would not be able to handle.
Winning Ways
I found a good series of articles on the internet written by Randy Ulmer.
TIP #1: Something For Nothing -- a little more S P E E D!
Looking for a little more speed? Here is one way to quickly pick up one to seven feet per second without changing your set-up. Place 1 to 4 brass Noc Sets or Eliminator Buttons on your string 1 - 2" from where it meets both the top and bottom wheels. The arrow speed gained depends upon the type of wheel. The more radical the cam, the more speed you'll pick up. The added string weight does not seem to effect tuning or timing. So, add the Noc Points, change your sight marks and go shoot! -Randy Ulmer
TIP #2: Timing -- One More Time!
Can't seem to get your cams timed? Can't tell when they are timed? Don't have the time to time? Just aren't that particular? Here's a tip that will help.
When in doubt about timing, always keep the top wheel a little ahead of the bottom wheel (less string wrap on the top wheel). The initial force on the nock will be upwards, away from the arrow rest. If the bottom wheel is ahead of the top wheel. (less string wrap on the bottom wheel) the nock will be forced down into the rest.
Not only is it better for the nock to move up and away from the rest initially, there is less vertical arrow motion when the top wheel is ahead of the bottom wheel. Less vertical movement means tighter groups. -Randy Ulmer
TIP #3: IS FASTER ALWAYS BETTER?
Many archers aren't getting the accuracy they should from their equipment. Their common lament is: "I used to be able to shoot tighter groups. Now I have this super fast bow and I can't hit anything with it". Fast bows are great! But for every bit of speed you gain, you sacrifice forgiveness. If you have perfect form, forgiveness doesn't matter as much. Unfortunately, most of us don't have flawless form. -Randy Ulmer
TIP #4: 'THE '5' MINUTE TUNE
Over the years, tuning a bow has become less time consuming. I've discovered a quick tune method that gets my bow going quickly. This method is a rough tune that is quite useful steps and you'll have most bows grouping well in just a few minutes.
Adjust the till, evenly for both limbs. Observe the timing of both cams at rest. They must be reasonably synchronized. Adjust the arrow rest slightly left of center. (To determine if the arrow rest centered, nock an arrow and line the string up with the arrow while standing behind the bow. The rest is centered when the string bisects the limbs lengthwise.) Adjust the nocking point to position the arrow perpendicular to the string. Adjust arrow rest vertical tension (if applicable) to a fairly light setting. This system assumes two things, that you shoot a release and that you must have decent form. If you follow these steps most newer bows will shoot very respectable groups. You can fine tune when you have more time. -Randy Ulmer
TIP #5: TIMING STEEL CABLE BOWS
One of the nice things about bows that use synthetic fiber bus cables is they are easy to 'time'. You can achieve perfectly synchronous wheel rollover simply by twisting (shortening) one bus cable or the other. Many archers think it's impossible to get that fine tuning capability on a bow that uses steel cables because when cutting and crimping steel cables, it is nearly impossible to end up with a perfectly matched pair.
Most people don't realize that you can twist steel cables to change their length just like you do with synthetic cables. Well, you can, but there are 3 things you must remember when twisting steel cables:
Always loosen (lengthen) the cable. Never tighten (shorten) it.
One twist in a steel cable will change the length much more than one twist in a synthetic cable.
Always twist the cable one full revolution (360 degrees). Never twist it only one-half revolution (180 degrees) or the cable may break. -Randy Ulmer
