November Indoor Tournament

Please note that the date of the November shoot has changed again. At the September meeting we set it at November 16 and 17. With further discussion at this meeting we noted that the 16th and 17th is the same dates as the Secretary / Presidents meeting in Grand Island. Hopefully the current date will stick. The November shoot will be a 300 round held on November 23 and 24.

3D News

Mike Vandeman was not at the October club meeting, so we did not discuss the proposal he presented at the last meeting. I thought it would be a good idea to leave the proposal in the newsletter this month. Please review it and bring any additional thoughts you might have to the next club meeting.

Proposal:

Since the schedule comes out Months before any of the outdoor shoots I don’t think this should be a problem. Registration and cooking are the 2 positions that we need the most help with. These are 2 very easy positions and you don’t even need leave your chair if you don’t want too; no walking of the hills, no sweating, no carrying heavy targets etc... etc. You would only need to collect money, cook a little food, do some paperwork, and smile and greet the archers. Training would be available if needed.

I (Mike), would like to stay on as 3D coordinator, and John Terfone would stay as food coordinator. John would take care of purchasing the food and soda, and I would bring out the paperwork. We would also be there for moral support if needed. If you could get someone to help you that day, your job would be much easier; but that part of the shoot would be yours to run. Those working registration and food would not need to participate in set up or tear down, Food and registration would be your involvement for the shoot.

Those volunteering to run food or registration would not need to do every shoot. We have 4 or 5 outdoor shoots and a couple of indoor shoots that are even easier to run. We would like to have volunteers that would only work one or two shoots.

There are also some other duties that I feel need to be addressed. These are solicitation prizes for the last 2 day shoot, and advertising for all the shoots - which includes making sure fliers are up in all the shops through the summer.

Aside from the first shoot and the last shoot when we take all the targets out and then in, I feel 4 to 6 people could set up the course at each shoot very easily. Anymore than that is too many - especially at the indoor shoots. Those 4 to 6 people need to be different at each shoot so we don’t have burned out members. We have enough membership that rotation would not be a problem.

We need to start functioning as a club again like when I started over 5 years ago - or I think we will be closing the doors, and soon. I think if we get back into the club and start putting on quality shoots again we could also cut down on the number of shoots we have. The end results would be less work for everyone, more fun for everyone, and a better turn out at the shoots. Looks like a no brainer to me, but I need your help if you want your club to stay afloat.

Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hunting season News

Three members have harvested deer (that I know of) as of this newsletter. In addition there was one turkey shot. Congratulations go out to the successful hunters.

Ahamo gives an award each year to the largest buck shot as well as deer awards for all deer harvested.

The following is the start of (hopefully) a long list of success's that will be in this column by the end of the year. Please call Lee Pereksta at 592-3856 to report your deer or Email Lee at hunterlee@msn.com. Your name will be added to the newsletter, and you will get a deer award at the end of the year at the annual banquet.

Big Buck Contest

If you get a buck this year and want to enter it in the Ahamo big buck contest just bring it down to a club meeting. Lee Pereksta will measure it for the club award. The measurement will be ‘unofficial’ and there is no need to wait for the ‘drying’ period. Past winners follow:

Getting ready for 2003

Believe it or not, we need to start thinking about some end of year activities.

First, there is the end of year banquet. We hold the banquet on the 2nd or 3rd Saturday in January. Those that were at the last club meeting were asked to check around for locations. We were at Anthony’s last year and Mr. C’s for several years before that. If you have a suggestion, please check with the restaurant to see what their prices are and bring what you found to the next club meeting. You can also pass the information on to a board member before the meeting.

At our annual banquet we give out deer awards, club service awards, and have drawings for cash awards - with the number of entries based on the hours worked at work parties this year. We also have elections of officers for the next year. Plan on attending, it’s usually a lot of fun.

2003 Officer Elections

Officer elections for 2003 must be precipitated by the nominations of club members to hold those offices. If you know a member that would be an asset in a board position, or if you would like to hold a position, please let a current board member know. Offices open include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Sergeant at Arms, Trustees (members at large to sit in at board meetings), and Newsletter Editor. Some of the current board members are willing to continue holding their positions again, but all would be more than willing to let someone else take over their position.

Holding an office is a great opportunity to make a difference. If you have any ideas that might help your club grow and prosper, running for an office is a good way to work towards that ends.

Winter Sports Festival

Bill Lewis reported that the Winter Sports Festival is being planned again for 2003. Ahamo was asked to run the 3D again, but there was some concern regarding the amount we would be paid per shooter. The festival proposed $6.00 per shooter - which is about $4.00 less than we charge at regular 3D shoots. The plus is that we will not need to purchase awards. However, there was some uncertainty at the October Club meeting over the value of the wear and tear on our targets and if the $6.00 fee would be sufficient.

Outdoor Range

Ahamo is currently looking for a new outdoor range. There have been some opportunities presented where we would get some support from Game and Parks if the range is one that would be open to the public.

We are looking for an unused park or some ground that is not being used that we would be able to use for a range. If anyone knows of a location that might work, please discuss it with a board member, or bring your idea to the next club meeting.

Bowhunter Education

If you need to take a bowhunter education class in order to hunt this year - you probably procrastinated too long. However, there are a couple of classes scheduled in Lincoln. Here is some information on Bowhunter Education from the Game and Parks web site.

Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has scheduled two bowhunter education classes in the Lincoln area during October and November.

The first class will be at the Army Reserve Center, 2000 No. 33 on Oct. 9, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.; Oct. 16 and 17, 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.; and Oct. 19, 9:00 a.m. - noon. Students must attend all four sessions to become certified, preregistration is required.

The second class will be at the Prairie Bowman Range, 14th & Old Cheney Road, Nov. 11, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.; Nov. 20 and 22, 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.; and Nov. 24, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.. Students must attend all four sessions to become certified, preregistration is required.

Interested parents are encouraged to attend.

Classes are open to anyone who will be 11 years of age in this calendar year. There is no maximum age limit for students and no charge for the course. Interested parents of youngsters taking the class are also encouraged to attend. Contact Tiffani Gerber at Game and Parks Commission Headquarters, 471-5558, to register. Information about other outdoor education courses can be found on-line at www.outdoornebraska.org, click on “Hunting” or “Outdoor Ed” and then on “Hunter Education”.

Nebraska law states that all persons 12 years of age or older, born on or after Jan. 1, 1977, must have successfully completed a state-certified bowhunter education course before hunting deer, antelope or wild turkey with archery equipment.

FAQ’s on Chronic Wasting Disease

The following are some Frequently Asked Questions on Chronic Wasting Disease from the Nebraska Game and Parks web site. Additional information can be found on that site.

Is the deer I harvest safe to eat?

There is currently no scientific evidence that CWD has or can spread to humans, either through contact with infected animals or by eating meat of infected animals. The Center of Disease Control has thoroughly investigated any connection between CWD and the human forms of TSEs and stated "the risk of infection with the CWD agent among hunters is extremely small, if it exists at all" and "it is extremely unlikely that CWD would be a food borne hazard". NGPC does not recommend eating a deer known to have CWD.

Can I get my deer tested for CWD and will NGPC pay for the test?

YES and NO. NGPC will pay for CWD tests for most of the deer taken in the Pine Ridge Control Area and in SC15. NGPC will notify hunters of the results. NGPC will also be collecting approximately 100 samples from deer in all other DMU's for CWD testing. NGPC will not pay for the testing of other deer. It may be possible for you to get your deer tested, but this requires you to remove and preserve the brain stem and send it in to a lab to get tested. Currently only three labs in the country can test for CWD. They are expected to be very busy as more states expand their CWD studies.

I want to keep my deer antlers. What Should I do?

If you use a saw to remove antlers, it should be cleaned and disinfected afterwards. This saw should not be used on any other part of the carcass. If you keep the entire skull for a (European mount), you should insure all meat is removed, wearing rubber or latex gloves while doing this, and soak the head in a strong chlorine bleach.

How can I reduce the possibility of spreading CWD contaminated tissue when butchering my deer?

Prions are concentrated in the brain, spinal cord, lymph glands, tonsils, eyes and spleen. Wear latex or rubber gloves. Bone all meat. Don't saw through bone. Removal of fatty tissue will remove all lymph glands.

Where else might CWD exist in Nebraska or in other states?

As the spread of CWD to Wisconsin points out, the potential exists for CWD to be found anywhere that deer or elk exist. It is unknown how or when CWD arrived in Wisconsin. Nebraska and other states will increase CWD detection efforts, but the primary identification of new CWD areas will come from spot surveillance. When a sick animal that exhibits CWD type symptoms is found, that animal will be tested for CWD.

Will CWD spread to other parts of Nebraska's deer herd?

We believe that CWD will spread outside of the existing CWD areas if it is not quickly controlled or eliminated. Deer commonly move 5 or 10 miles between winter and summer ranges. It is not uncommon for individual deer to move 50 or more miles in one year.

I hear that shooting deer over bait is now illegal. Can I use food plots? Can I bait/feed outside of deer season?

A Game and Parks regulation passed earlier this year governs hunting over bait. NGPC used its authority over hunting to make it illegal to hunt within 200 yards of an area that has been baited during the past 60 days. Food plots are legal at all times of the year. Baiting and feeding of deer is also legal, but hunting over bait is not legal. Considering the risks associated with baiting and the possibility of spreading CWD and other disease organisms, NGPC believes it prudent that hunters and landowners stop all baiting and feeding of deer and elk. We believe that baiting, mineral blocks, feed piles used by deer all increase the odds of disease transmission. While the method of CWD disease transmission is not known, the best guess is that nose to nose contact increases the risk.
