December 3D Shoot
Our next 3D will be on December 8 and 9 at the indoor range. It will be a 2 day shoot like the November shoot. Note that on prior schedules it shows as a 1 day shoot. We will have a workparty to set up on Saturday December 8 at 3:00. As soon as the range is set up members can begin shooting. The official registration time will be from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Saturday, and from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sunday.
The November results did not make it to this newsletter. However, I will post them on the web when I get them. The results will also be in the December newsletter.
A special thank you goes out to Mike Vandeman for stepping in and running the November 3D at the last minute when the 3D coordinator could not make it to this shoot.
Hunting season News
Our list of successful hunters is growing. There are several that have shot bonus deer in some of the special areas set up as doe only. Looks like our members are doing their part to reduce the deer population in some of the overpopulated sections of the state. There are a couple of stories from members in this newsletter. If you would like to share your hunt with other club members, please email your story to me, or write them down and just give them to me. Please give me your deer pictures also - I will add them to the newsletter and will return them to you.
Please call Lee Pereksta at 592-3856 to report your deer or Email Lee at hunterlee@msn.com. Your name will be added to the newsletter, and you will get a deer award at the end of the year at the annual banquet.

Big Buck Contest
We have two entries in this yearÆs big buck contest. Dick Sousa shot a big 3x3 that measured 102 1/8. Lee Pereksta shot a 4x4 that measured 120 2/8 and is currently leading. If anyone else shoots a deer they would like measured for the contest, bring it down to the range during a club meeting and I will measure it.
Deer Stories from our members
Story-1
Well late in the day and found myself covered about deer. They seem to be all around me just as I walked over the hill . Suddenly there they were, and I could only get a good shot about 45 yards out. As soon as I pulled the old bow back they looked up. When I released the the trigger the large doe walked towards me with her head up and snorting as a mad and unknown object had come over her but could not figure out what I was because the wind was in my face.
I struck her in the chest facing me, hitting the left shoulder bone and glancing into the heart. When the arrow hit her she knew that something was wrong and took off running to the woods. She went about 150 to 200 yds at the most and dropped to the ground. Some will run some will just lay down. So then I found the old blood trail to the woods and found her. I dragged her out loaded her up in the old truck and took her off site to clean her. It sure would of been nice to have a few photos of it but that was ok.

Story-2
It was about 8:30 in the morning on Saturday October 6th. I was in my corner stand near the property line of the wooded area we were hunting. There was a fence about 25 yards behind me and another 50 yards to my side. On the other side of the fence there was just more woods. In front of me was about 300 yards of woods and then a bean field. To my left was about 150 yards of woods and another bean field. Dick Sousa and Steve Murphy were hunting stands in other areas of the woods and we were to meet at about 10:00 by my stand.
I saw a couple of small bucks and a couple of doe earlier but nothing close. I was hoping to fill one of my doe only permits and had high hopes of taking my first shot of the year. From my right I heard the leaves crunching and slowly turned my head. There were several deer - all doe, over the fence line about 50 yards away. They seemed to keep coming forever until about 20 of them were just milling around.
I had my grunt call set to a high pitch to sound like a doe and gave a couple of grunts. Just like magic about 5 of the doe jumped the fence and walked towards my stand. I had turned to the right facing my tree and had my bow in a ready position hoping for a chance to draw. It was difficult to draw my bow because they were looking all around and I would have been spotted. After a few minutes they started back towards the fence. At last I came to full draw and aimed low and through the chest area of the biggest doe of the five. I made a sound like a fawn bleating to stop her from walking and made my shot. The arrow looked like it flew where I was aiming and all 5 doe were off in a flash. I tried to keep my eye on the one I had shot, but lost it in the commotion.
All of a sudden, two of them came running back towards me. I quickly put another arrow in my bow and had serious thoughts of shooting another deer. Since I hadn't seen the first one fall I was afraid that I would end up tracking 2 deer and decided to pass. The deer both went back to the fence, jumped it, and all of them just seemed to fade away. I checked my watch, and decided to wait a good half hour because I wasn’t positive how well the deer was hit. I checked my compass to note the direction they were running and began to study the ground where the deer was standing when I shot. It was about 15 yards away, and I saw some red on the ground at that spot. I pulled out my binoculars for a closer look. My arrow was stuck in the ground and there seemed to be an explosion of blood around it. I was beginning to feel much better about the shot.
After a half hour, I quietly got down, snuck up to the arrow and marked the spot with some tissue. The arrow was just covered with blood. I decided to go to the fence line first and see if there was a blood trail crossing it. When I got there, I saw the doe laying up against the fence. The arrow had gone through the liver, out the chest, and the doe had only made it as far as the fence before piling up. The two deer that came running back to me must have been frightened when the doe went down. I got my pack, laid out my knife, saw, and paper towels and started to field dress just as Steve got there. He hadn’t seen a single deer, and when Dick got there he had only seen a couple of non-shooters.
Because of the bonus tags I have for the Blue area and for the special Fontenelle forest hunt, I have 6 total permits this year. One down, and five to go.

3D Coordinator for 2002
Mike Vandeman volunteered to coordinate our 3D’s for 2002. Thank you Mike... Ahamo’s shoots will be in good hands next year.
I’d like to put in a plug for members to help whenever they can next year. The more help we get the easier it is to set up and run our shoots.
Officers Wanted:
We are still looking for members to run for an office for 2002. Please put the names of those you think would do a good job for your club in the nomination box at the indoor range. You can also volunteer to run for an office - just talk to a board member.
Newsletter Items
If you are a club member and have an item for sale, please send me the information and I’ll put it in the newsletter. I also welcome newsletter articles. My Email address is: hunterlee@MSN.com
Winter Games
Ahamo, Full Draw, Woods and Waters, and Golden Arrow are talking about holding our own archery winter games in 2002. Since the state games have been canceled, we don’t know why we can’t hold our own. It could be a lot of fun, and we did get a lot of participation last year.
If we do go forward with the winter games they will be held after the Sportsman's show. In prior years the Winter Games were held on the same date as the Sportsman's show and it was difficult getting workers to help at both events when they were held at the same time.
Note that we will be helping with the sportsman's show again this year.
2002 Newsletters
I currently mail 44 newsletters per month, and Email 34. There are 21 of our members receive both. Each mailed newsletter costs the club about $6.50 per year. I am proposing that all members that have Email only receive the Email copy in 2002 unless I receive a valid request to send both. The proposal will be discussed at the December meeting.

The following are the Solunar tables for our area from the November Field and Stream magazine. The Solunar tables were developed by John Alden Knight and show anticipated game activity periods based on the moon in relation to the earth.
