May Club Meeting

There were 15 members at the May meeting. We discussed recommendations from the pop-up target committee, 3D drawings for raffle prizes, and the American Round leagues. There was one new member voted in.

New members:

The new member voted in at the meeting was not present. He still needs to pay his dues before officially becoming a club member.

Pop-up Target Use:

It was a very interesting discussion at the May meeting regarding the pop-up targets. The committee did an excellent job planning how to use the targets, but there was still some outstanding items to go over.

In case you haven’t seen the targets (which we used at the indoor 3D we hosted in Wahoo this year), they consist of 6 frames to hold 3D targets, and a computer mechanism that is connected to the frames. An air compressor is connected to the set up, and the targets ‘pop-up’ in a random sequence for a short time frame. The targets pop-up one at a time, and the archers must locate the target that popped up and shoot it before it lays back down, and get prepared for the next target to pop-up.

Pop-Up Tournament:

The pop-up committee presented rules for the tournament. The pop-up targets will be set out at various distances near the practice area at the outdoor range. It will cost $5.00 to enter and shoot 2 rounds of 5 arrows. There are 6 targets, but one will be designated a dummy and is not to be shot. Archers can enter as many times as they want and we will only keep their top score.

Medals will be given to the top 3 shooters in each division and the top 10 in each division will be invited to the finals to be held at our last outdoor shoot of the year. Plaques will be given to the winners of the final shoot. The committee developed an excellent registration form that Steve Williamsen then formatted on his computer. The form explains the rules in a format that is easy to understand.

The first pop-up tournament was held May 16 and went pretty well. Some archers shot multiple times. It was pretty interesting watching people shoot the pop-up’s. One person tried to move his sight each time, missed shooting 2 of the targets, and re-shot with one setting to get a very good score. Others needed to shoot more than once just to figure out how best to shoot it. A couple of others decided that their releases were just too slow to attach and would need to try again next time with a release that’s easier to load. I think that all shooters enjoyed it so much that they will be shooting it again. See the scores later in the May 16 shoot results to see what was shot and those that are eligible for the final shoot in August.

3D raffle prizes:

This took a lot of discussion during the last club meeting before we finally arrived at a decision on how to handle the raffle. We will purchase a nice tree stand, and will have two containers for door prizes set out; one for the stand and one for a stain glass eagle that Dan Cady donated to the club for a raffle. We will sell tickets at each shoot, and will give one ticket out with each pop-up registration. The tickets can be placed in either of the 2 boxes and will be drawn at the final shoot of the year.

Loaning the pop-up targets:

This took a lot of discussion at the last club meeting also. The pop-up targets were pretty expensive and were purchased by one of our club members that we need to pay back (Thanks Mike). We want to be very careful that we don’t break them at least until they are paid for. Until we are more comfortable with the use of the pop-up system, and at least until it is paid off, the system will only be used at club functions. If there is a special event that the pop-up targets could be used at, the board will need to discuss and approve that use. However, a club member familiar with the use of the targets will need to run the targets at the event. Other than that, we will not loan the targets to other clubs.

Outdoor League

The outdoor league has already started. Members are invited to come out and join or just shoot along if there is room on the line. We shoot an American Round, which is from 60, 50, and 40 yards at a 48 inch target. Mike Stanner will be letting us shoot in his yard again. Please come on out to shoot, it’s a lot of fun.

The league will be handicapped, and we will follow a format where we will be drawing for 2 man teams each night. Team points will go to each individual, with individual points going towards individual awards. Winners will have their names added to a plaque we will put up at the indoor range.

Mike’s address is: 11222 Kentucky Road in Papillion. His phone is 592-3308.

Next 3D shoot:

Our next 3D shoot is the second outdoor shoot of the year. Now that the targets and equipment have all been hauled out to the outdoor range, setting up for the next shoot will be much easier. Some of the targets are left set up between shoots, and the rest we will need to set up the day prior to each shoot. We will also need to set up the tents, registration area, bow racks, practice targets, and pop-up targets. If we get enough workers, set up a pretty fast. We will plan on starting at about 8:00 on Saturday June 12. Tear down starts at about 2:00 on Sunday the 13th.

Other News:

Bill Lewis said that Nebraska Game and Parks has money available to support setting up an outdoor range in our area. He will be checking with them to see what is available and what we need to do.

Lost - set of Drill Bits:

Ed Rebarich took a nice set of drill bits to the indoor range when we were getting things ready to take to the outdoor range. He left them and when he returned to the range they were gone. If you picked them up by accident to hold them till someone claimed them, or know who might have them; please contact Ed.
