There will be an indoor 300 round tournament on Sunday March 8. Please support your club and shoot in our Tournament. There are only 2 shooting lines 9:00 and 12:00. Call Bill Rhoades to reserve a shooting time.
If you would like to help, check with Bill to see if you can help in the kitchen or with registration. Some deserts to sell during the shoot would also be nice.
Club Information
A Club information sheet is now available at the indoor range. It is a description of our club for anyone that might be interested in joining our club. Feel free to pick up some copies to read or distribute.
JOAD Children's League News
The Junior Olympic Archery Development League is still in full swing. Bill Arledge thanked everyone that has been working with the league. I hope I haven’t forgotten anyone, but I know that Patty Pulsifer, Bill Arledge, Dave Wise, Dick Sousa, and Wendy Humm all deserve many thanks for their support of the league.
If you would like to have your children participate in the JOAD program, just bring them to the indoor range at 6:30 on Thursdays.
Bill Arledge reported that there is a JOAD Tournament planned for Saturday, March 28th in Fremont. The entry fee is $5.00. Anyone that participates in JOAD is welcome to shoot. Please contact Bill if you have any questions.
Bill also noted that an Outdoor shoot at the public range the Golden Arrow club shoots at is being planned for JOAD. In addition, a children's only 3D tournament is being planned.
Compound Bow Donated to JOAD
Craig Nakamoto of the Arrow Factory in Glenwood Iowa has donated a compound bow to our JOAD league. Thank you Craig for your generous contribution; with the excellent turnout we have had so far for the league, the bow will be put to good use.
3D News
The new targets have arrived for our 1998 3D season. We just missed having them for the Cornhusker Winter Games, but will have some really nice targets from this point on. We also voted in the purchase of a Buffalo target at the club meeting. We probably won’t have it in time for the first outdoor shoot but look for it later this year.
Mike Vandeman repaired the movable target for our indoor shoots, so it will be used at the March 14 - 3D.
March 14 Indoor 3D: Note that this shoot is on Saturday only. Set-up will be on Friday the 13th at 7:00, and tear down will be on Saturday afternoon.
March 28 Outdoor Workparty: This workparty will start at 9:00 at the outdoor range. We will be clearing fallen trees and all shooting lanes and trails. Bring chain saws, hand saws and clippers, and your muscles to this workparty. The first shoot will be one week later, so we need to get as much ready as possible on the 28th.
April 5 Outdoor 3D: There will be a setup workparty for this shoot on Saturday April 4. The workparty will start at 8:00 at the indoor range to pick up targets, and 9:00 at the outdoor range. Please come out and help. If you can’t make it at 8:00, be at the outdoor range after 9:00. The clean up will begin Sunday afternoon between 3:00 and 4:00.
Cornhusker State Games
The Cornhusker State Games were a large success. We had 130 shooters at our range and the shoot ran exceptionally smooth. Bill Rhoades did an great job running this shoot. We ran it as a continuous line and it went off without any problems at all. There were quite a few volunteers to help all through the shoot and everyone had a good time.
Thank you Bill, for all of your hard work, and thanks to all that helped out during the shoot.
The Nebraska Traditional Archers
will be using our indoor range all day on Saturday March 21. Feel free to stop down to see their equipment and any workshops they may by having. There may be a cost for this event. Note that the range will be closed on that day to open shooting.
Coaches Clinic at our Range?
Bill Arledge said we have the opportunity to have a coaches clinic at our range. The Cost will be between $150.00 and $200.00 per person. The clinic will be run by an instructor certified by the NAA. The classes will be on a Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday. Please contact Bill for more information. (I intend to participate unless I am out of town that weekend).
1998 Hunting Season News
The proposed changes to the 1998 hunting season dates and regulations have not yet been voted on. However, the proposals were discussed at a Game and Parks seminar in February. The early Blue area season is not being proposed this year. A late season is being planned, but may not start until January. In addition, a Muzzleloader season is being proposed for the first week of October that will include only one weekend.
A new program for Bird Hunting is being finalized called the Harvest Information Program (HIP). All bird hunters will need to obtain a HIP number and card that they must carry with them. Harvest information will need to be recorded on the card, and it must be turned in at the end of the season. The way this will be carried out still has not been determined; there were some thoughts that it might be a requirement that it be turned in to obtain your next years card or license. This program is national and implementation is being planned for September 1998.
Wildlife Diversity Initiative
Be aware that a new initiative is in the works similar to the one that adds an 11% tax on all hunting equipment. The Wildlife Diversity Initiative is targeted to all gear used to enjoy the outdoors, other than hunting gear covered by the 11% tax already in effect. This tax is being proposed at 5%, and will be used to increase the habitat of non-game animals and for education and recreation leading to a fuller enjoyment of the outdoors. The items planned to be included are backpacks, cooking stoves, cooking stove fuel, hiking boots, tents, sleeping bags, binoculars, cameras, film, and many other similar items. Those in favor of this initiative are asking sportsmen to write to manufacturers and saying they are in favor of this initiative, and also to their Congressmen. I think this is a very controversial Initiative. When it was presented at a Game and Parks Conference in Grand Island, a majority of those in attendance were not in favor of it.
Club Members’ hunting trips
Several of our club members have been on hunting trips lately. In January; Dick Sousa, Bill Rhoades, Steve Murphy, Mike Vandeman, John Terfone, and Lee Pereksta made a trip to Antlers Oklahoma in search of wild pigs. The pigs won during that trip, but a good time was had by all. The area had a lot of recent rain and had some high water to drive through, but was fairly dry during the hunt. The hunt started on a Friday at noon and ended on Sunday noon. The cost for each hunter was $150.00, and included two guides, a primitive bunk house, and some initial baiting by the guides.
Due to some recent problems on the ranch the group saw only a couple of pigs, and none of them within bow range. An exception was John Terfone, who had a very small pig scoot under his stand one day. Dick Sousa saw a large pig at a distance, and Mike Vandeman saw a distant pig also. There was a lot of Longhorn Cattle on the ranch, as well as Mountain Lions, Bear, Deer, Bobcats, Coyotes, and other animals. Also seen was an actual road runner. The guides forfeited their fees because of the lack of game, but the conditions looked good enough, that all agreed that they would like to try it again.
In February, Harry Simpson also went on a pig trip. Harry went to the King Ranch in Texas and also came home pigless. He did see a couple of pigs, and managed to stalk within 45 yards of one before it walked into the brush and out of range.
If anyone has any stories about recent trips, please call me or send me a note.
A Turkey Calling Demonstration
was held at our last club meeting. Thanks to Bill Arledge for arranging it, and thanks to Jeff Miller for taking the time to share his skills at our meeting. We saw a number of different calls and were able to hear how each one sounded. We were also given some excellent tips on turkey hunting.
