Bowhunter Education Class

We will be holding a Bowhunter Ed class at our indoor range on April 9, and 10; plus April 12 at the Aksarben Aquarium. Those days are a Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Please note that the indoor range will be closed on April 9 and 10 from 5:30 to 9:30 for the class. The class will run from 6:00 to 9:00, but we will need set-up and tear down time. If you would like to attend the class, please call Game and Parks at 332-3901 to register. Tell them you would like to register for the class on April 9, 10, and 12 to be held at Ahamo.

The class will be taught by Lee Pereksta, Dave Wise, Bill Lewis, Nick Tramp, and Rich Caldwell. Classes are geared to both new and experienced bowhunters. If you have any thoughts of being an instructor, please volunteer to help, or you can just take the class to see what it’s like.

3D News

At a wrap-up meeting for the Winter Archery Festival we were told that Ahamo would be getting $8.00 per shooter at the shoot next year. Several of us were not happy about the fee structure this year, as we only received $6.00 per shooter and just barely covered our 3D target expenses. We will need to consider if we want to support the 3D part of the shoot next year.

Note that there will be a 3D shoot on March 16. Set-up will be on Saturday March 15 at 2:00. Registration is scheduled from 8am to noon on the 16th, but we will open it up for a Saturday night line if anyone wants to shoot after we finish setting up on the 15th.

Please support your club at this shoot, either setting up, tearing down (starting 1:30 on the 16th), or by shooting at the shoot.

From your club President:

We have a lot of things to discuss at our next club meeting, and would like to have everyone’s input on the items to be on the agenda. Please plan on attending the next meeting.

Agenda items include:

Holding a 3D indoor shoot next year in Wahoo.

Participation in the Winter Festival next year.

Discussion of a new range that Game and Parks
said they would help us with.

Holding a membership drive, and how to
compensate members for bringing in new members.

I plan on bringing treats to the club meeting for everyone - don’t miss out on the fun.

Hunting News

Here’s a recent hunting story.

Four of your club members found a pretty good place to hunt in Oklahoma. It was called Bow Safari, and is located in Coalgate Oklahoma. Information on it can be found on their web site www.BowSafari.com.

The four of us that went were your president - Bill Rhoades, Dick Sousa, Steve Murphy, and myself (Lee Pereksta). We hunted for 3 days for a fee of $75.00 per day. For that fee, we were entitled to lodging and three hogs if we would have been that lucky.

The ranch was 1400 acres, which was about 2 miles wide by 1 mile deep. It was surrounded by a pretty expensive fence and held quite a few animals. They had deer, exotic deer and sheep, hogs, and buffalo. We only went for the hogs, but there was a group of 6 there with us, that had 4 people hunting buffalo. All four were able to harvest a buffalo, and they were pretty large ones. How they got all that meat home is a mystery to me...

Our accommodations were miles nicer than the last pig hunt Dick got me into. At that place we had no water, no heat, and no electricity. At Bow Safari we had comfortable beds with mattresses we put our sleeping bags on, heat, hot water, showers, and a pretty nice kitchen and lodge area. We even had cable TV and a VCR with hunting videos to watch.

The lodge had 4 sets of bunk beds in a living area on each side of the kitchen plus a pull out type bed. It could have held 18 people at one time, but the owners limited the numbers to 10 per day. Our group had one bunk area, and the group of six had the other one.

There were some pretty strict rules we had to follow, and we found that the owner was a by the rules type of person. We weren’t allowed to stalk animals at all, and were only allowed to scout between 10am and 2pm. In the early morning and at 2pm, we were only allowed to go to our stands and were required to hunt from them. It was a bow only hunting camp and they did not want to put any undue pressure on the animals so that the hunters would all have chances to get an animal.

At 4:00 each day, a truck drove through the roads that criss crossed the hunting area and spread corn on the roads. Shortly after the truck went by, lots and lots of animals were out after the corn. At one time, I had a dozen white tail deer and 8 pigs on the road in front of me. The only problem was that the deer and exotics went after the corn and I could not shoo them away fast enough. When the pigs came by, it was difficult to find a boar large enough to shoot, but there were quite a few sows and small piggies all around. All of us managed to get a shoot at a decent pig, but two of us were not able to find ours. I think that the next time I go, my strategy for finding a decent stand will change a little and I’ll have a much better change to harvest one or more hogs.

The way we all hunted, was to head out at 10:00 without our bows, and scout the area for stand sites. The first night we got there was not a hunting day, so we rode around the ranch on the truck that spread corn. There was actually a set of bench seats in the back of the pick-up and we all sat there to watch for game as we drove around spreading corn. We saw quite a bit that evening, and I sat there punching in locations in my GPS each time a saw a likely looking place to hunt. Scouting for me consisted of finding the spots again per my GPS and finding likely trees in those areas.

Each night, after the corn truck went by, I got out of my stand and spread my own corn on the road in front of me. That way when the pigs came out, they spent more time in front of my stand. That worked pretty good, except that I only saw a couple of shooters from my stand, and only one that came close enough for a shot. All of us got shots the second night out, and all of our stands were put up new that day. The third day we all hunted the same stands as the second - and we agreed that it would have been much better to hunt a new stand each day.

Bill got the biggest and won the largest pig pot we had all put up. We all found that you need to aim pretty low on the pigs to get a good hit. You will have to ask Bill about his pig. He and Murphy were playing Rambo as they dispatched his pig following a spine shot. Steve was the other one of our group that harvested a pig. His was a little smaller than Bill’s, but he’ll be able to enjoy many more meals from this hunt than Dick and I.

The owner was not there for two of the days we hunted, and the ranch was run by his friends. Alvin and his brother Dan were there when we got up, they drove the truck to spread corn, and were there to be sure we all got back to camp safely each night. What was especially nice, was Alvin cooking a pig for us and putting on a very nice spread for a bunch of hunters that were living on their own cooking.

It was a great trip, and I plan on trying it again.

I found out at league this past week that Rich Chandler is heading out to the same place we went in a couple of weeks. Rich, be sure to give me some information for the newsletter when you get back.
