There were 7 members at the June meeting. We discussed 3D and Pop-up shoots and rules, awards for the shoots, and a couple of other things. There was one new member voted in.

Outdoor Leagues:

In case you haven’t attended the outdoor league yet, don’t hesitate to give it a try. Each Tuesday 6 to 8 of us are shooting at Mike Stanner's house. We’re shooting an American Round league that consists of 3 rounds of 5 arrows from 60 yards, 50 yards, and 40 yards. Each night we draw for partners and shoot for points. The points won by the partners go to each individual. The winner of the league will get his name on a plaque to be kept at the indoor range.

Pop-Up Tournament:

The results of the pop-up tournament from our last shoot are posted in the shoot results on our web site. The pop-up tournament is a lot of fun at our shoots. I even heard one group on the course say that they could have gone to a couple of shoots that day, but came to ours so they could shoot the pop-ups.

Many thanks go out to Steve Williamson who ran the shoot at our first two tournaments this year. He has done an excellent job setting things up and getting the targets to work. There have been a couple of glitches though as the computer, wiring, air hoses, and generator need a lot of TLC to make everything work when set up. We have also been lucky that it hasn’t rained during our shoots to cause problems with the electrical components.

We may be playing with the timing of the shoot in the future. At the last shoot we opened the pop-up shoot at 8 AM, but didn’t get any shooters till 11:00. We also announced it would be open till 1:00 so we would have time to take it down. A lot of shooters didn’t shoot it till they were done with the 3D course, so at 1:00 we were pretty busy. We may run it next time from 11:00 till 2:00 to get the maximum use of the targets and the people running the pop-ups.

3D Shoot News:

We had great weather at our June 13 shoot, and a good turn out. There also seemed to be a lot of help setting it up and tearing down. Many Many thanks to those who helped set up and tear down, and especially to those that worked throughout the day running the shoot.

Note that the next 3D shoot is not until August 1, with set up on Saturday July 31. Set-up will start at about 8 AM on Saturday. Please come out to help if you can. If we get the same turnout of workers it should again be an easy work party.

There are only two outdoor shoots remaining this year: one on August 1, and the other on August 28 and 29.

Board Meeting:

The board will be meeting before the next club meeting to discuss the first two 3D shoots and possible changes to make the next two shoots even better. If anyone has any ideas or has heard any criticisms of our first two shoots, please let a board member know, or send me an email (hunterlee@msn.com).

Next Newsletter:

Since we will not have a shoot before the next newsletter comes out, news may be kind of sparse. If anyone has any hunting stories, tuning tips, wild game recipes, or anything else, please send them to me.

Note that if not enough news is available, there might not be a July Newsletter. We may instead just have the calling committee contact everyone prior to the next shoot with work party information.

Cooking Venison:

I have put a couple of recipes in the newsletter before. Here’s a short article on cooking venison in general. Recently, my wife has had occasion to discuss deer meat with some of her school teacher friends. Some have asked how we could even eat deer. They said they have had it before and it has a wild gamy taste that they do not like. Mary Lou has simply stated that whoever shot the deer must not have taken care of it correctly.

I agree with that statement wholeheartedly. I don’t remember ever tasting bad venison. I field dress my deer as soon as I find it, hang it right after field dressing (even before dragging it out of the woods), wash it out with water I have in my pack (I carry a small bottle of water with a little white vinegar in it and use a squirt bottle top). I get to the butcher right away, or hang it at home overnight after hosing it down to clean it as thoroughly as possible.

When we cook deer, we cook it just like beef. The only difference is that deer has less fat and should be cooked with moisture or a little rarer that beef to keep it from drying out.

Mary Lou cooks our roasts either in a cooking bag, or in a crock pot. The crock pot recipe is pretty simple. She just adds one can of beef gravy and 1 to 2 teaspoons of minced garlic. Then cooks it for 8 to 9 hours on a low heat. It is extremely tender and tasty.

Crock pot stew is also pretty good. Cut 2 lbs. of meat into cubes, add 1 can of cream of mushroom soup, and one package of dry onion soup. cook for 6 to 8 hours on a low heat. Add a cup of sour cream before serving and serve over noodles.

We also use ground venison a lot. We have it ground without adding anything to it. We then cook it in spaghetti sauce, or mix it with taco seasoning mix and use it for tacos.

Finally there is cooking steaks. I do a couple of different things depending on my mood. We sometimes season it with season salt and lemon pepper, and cook it just like any other steak. More recently though, I have gotten into marinades and injectors. I like to inject different kinds of sauce into the meat, let it set for an hour, and cook it on the grill. I use a garlic butter sauce, teriyaki sauce, old fashioned steakhouse, and more recently a honey teriyaki sauce that seems to leave my steaks extremely juicy.

Note that I always cook venison rare to medium rare to keep it from drying out.
