July 6 Club Meeting News

Club Meeting highlights

The July meeting was attended by 16 members. We discussed the 3D shoots and improvements needed to them, cutting new cardboard for the indoor range, and the planned River City Roundup shoot our Club will be putting on. There were no new members voted in at the meeting. Gary Brunberg won the incentive drawing for $17.00.

Note that there will not be a club meeting in August. Several of the board members will be out of town, so we decided to cancel the meeting, If we do end up rescheduling, the calling committee will contact members.

Outdoor Range News

The 3D committee asked for help from all members at our shoots. The committee coordinates all of the shoots, and is very close to being burned out. There is a lot of work involved in setting up and running the shoots. If more members would spend a couple of hours setting up or tearing down the targets at each shoot it would be greatly appreciated. Please note the scheduled workparties and come out and help.

There are only two 3D shoots remaining this year; one on July 27, and another on August 30 and 31.

There were several comments received after our last shoot that the 3D committee is paying attention to for the remaining shoots this year. There was also a letter received over the Internet that is printed in its entirety later in this newsletter.

Overheard at a 3D shoot

One of our members was attending a 3D shoot and was discussing attendance at 3D shoots. He was told that one club found their attendance increased when they dropped all reference to IBO at their shoots. The archers that began to come were those that did not care for the type of competitive shooting they seemed to associate with IBO.

Indoor Range News

The indoor range is currently a mess. We carried down a lot of new cardboard and took out a lot of the old cardboard to put in the outdoor range backstop. We hope to cut all of the cardboard and rebuild the indoor backstops within the next week or two. Workparties are scheduled for July 12, and July 15. It is probably too late to notify members about the 12th workparty, but you should have been called by the calling committee for that. Help is also needed on the 15th and if we do not finish on that date we are hoping that members will continue to stop down throughout the next week or so to cut and replace the cardboard. Note that there is a table saw at the range to use to cut the cardboard. - Thank you Roy for letting us use your saw.

Note that the Nebraska Traditional Archers will be using our indoor range for a workshop all day on Saturday July 26. There will be no open shooting on that day.

Outdoor News

The outdoor field league that the Golden Arrow club held is finished, and the American Round League will be finishing on July 17. The 17th is the last chance anyone has to shoot along with the Golder Arrow Club to get some practice for the Cornhusker State Games. If you'd like to come out, the league starts at 6:30.

River City Roundup

Our Club is Co-Hosting the River City Roundup Golden Spike American Round Tournament scheduled to be held on September 27 and 28 at Aksarben. This will be a very good opportunity to showcase our sport. The shoot will be held at the west end of Aksarben and will allow many people unfamiliar with archery to see what it's all about. We need to get as many people as possible to register for the shoot, and conduct ourselves in an exemplary manner. The shooting fees are reasonable and the shoot should be a lot of fun. A copy of the registration form is included in this newsletter. If you would like to help run the shoot, give Mike Stanner a call.

Club Shirts

If you are interested in obtaining a club shirt, Mike Stanner gave me the address and phone number of the company that makes them. Contact Kevin Archibald at Drake Distributing - 4852 S. 133st Suite 107 - Omaha Ne 68137 - Phone 895-0577. If you have any questions about the shirts or how to order them you can call Mike Stanner with your questions.

Dart League

Bill Arledge mentioned at our last meeting that Full Draw will be starting a Dart System league within the next few weeks. The Dart System is the one that projects videos of deer and other animals on a screen for shooting. The system has automatic scoring and is a lot of fun. This league will be a money payback type of league. If you have any questions call Full Draw, or contact Bill Arledge.

Bowhunting Tune up Session

Bill Arledge mentioned at our last club meeting that the Golder Arrow Club asked if any of our members would be interested in helping set up a tune up session for this year's hunting season. It would be held at the Golden Arrow outdoor range and would consist of members from the Golden Arrow Club, the Ahamo Club, Woods and Waters, and anyone else interested in helping work with others to set up their equipment for the hunting season. We would have tuning equipment available (bow presses, paper tuning equipment, bow squares, etc.) and people willing to help others set up their equipment. Call Bill if you would like to help. His number is 333-4428.

Bowhunter Education Class

There are a couple of Bowhunter education classes in the works now. Gary Brunberg is looking for someone to be a lead instructor for a class to start the end of July or early August. Give him a call at 895-5458 if you would like to volunteer or help put on the class.

In addition, He asked if anyone would like to be the lead instructor for a class to start at the end of August or early September. Lee Pereksta volunteered, and Bill Arledge, Bill Lewis, and Dave Wise all volunteered to help. If you would like to help with that class, please call Lee at 592-3856. We need instructors for that class and also club members that would like to be 'helpers' at the class. Helpers are needed to set up 3D targets and help run the 3D course, set up and help run the blood trailing course, and help with many other parts of the class. Please volunteer if you would like to help with any part of the class.

The following was received on the Internet. Please read it, and then read the response from our club.

I would like to comment on the lack of "class" that I have been seeing at a few of your recent shoots. This last shoot I followed 1 group of seven shooters that had some of your club members in it. The group ahead of them had six shooters including some of your club members. It took me more than 5 hours to complete your course. Me and every other archer on the line at the time blew through the back stops on the practice range costing me one arrow. Another archer just plain lost one. When I turned in my score I asked about the results of the last shoot (for I was in 2nd place when I left) I was told you did not have them. 5 minutes later I friend of mine came to the truck with His "trophy" from the last shoot. I guess you had the results after all. His "trophy" consisted of a .99 cent medal that other clubs give as participation medals to the pee-wee class. Currently me & my shooting partner(s) will go elsewhere if there is a choice. I will not return unless you would like to treat your "customers" in a better manner.

Response

The board discussed the above and agreed that some of it does ring true. Some of it also needs an explanation. The person who sent the letter over the Internet did not leave a return address so the response will be put in the Newsletter and on the Internet.

The 3D committee will be policing shooters to be sure there is a maximum of 5 in a group. Club members are asked to do the same and to let faster shooters through if it makes sense to do so.

The club has now purchased 4 stuffed fabric targets for the practice range. Arrows will not pass through these targets.

The results of prior shoots will be posted at our shoots. - Note that trophies and medals for those that place, are marked with the names of those that won if they are not picked up at the tournament. When the shooters register for the next shoot, they can pick up their trophies from prior shoots. That is what occurred at the shoot mentioned above when the archer did not see a list from the prior shoot and someone was able to pick up a medal.

The medals we gave out were not .99 cent medals. However, the board discussed the medals given out and decided to not use medals anymore for those archers that place. (Participation medals for children will still be given out.) In addition, anyone that placed (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and received a medal can bring that medal to our next shoot and we will replace it with a trophy. This decision was not because of the one archer that complained, but because we received comments from several people and decided to do away with the medals.

More Comments

The image we project at our tournaments reflects on all club members. It will affect us at future shoots, by drawing additional shooters or by keeping people away. We need to do everything possible to treat those at our shoots like we would want to be treated at other tournaments. Please be cognizant of that when you attend our shoots as either a shooter or a worker - and by all means be a respectful archer when attending other clubs shoots. Be proud of your club, and wear clothing that identifies you as an Ahamo member.
