July Club Meeting
The July meeting was attended by 11 members. We discussed the next shoot, a YMCA camp support activity, and picking up the targets after our next shoot. Ed Rebarich and Lee Pereksta split the incentive drawing for $7 ($3.50 each).
New Members
There were no new members voted in at the club meeting.
Outdoor Leagues
Outdoor leagues are still going on at Mike Stanner's house. We are shooting in a format where we draw for who we shoot against each week and shoot for a payback of our shooting fees. Come on out and shoot along, It’s a lot of fun. Mike’s address is: 11222 Kentucky Road in Papillion. His phone is 592-3308.
August 4,5 3D
Our next 3D will be our annual 2 day shoot. Please help with the workparties for this and support your club by shooting in this shoot. If you can’t help at the work parties - you will still be supporting your club if you shoot in the tournament. It’s a good tune up for hunting season, which is just around the corner.
Scheduled workparties are Friday, Aug 3 at 6:00 to set up and Sunday Aug 5 at about 1:00 to tear down. We will also be needing help throughout the weekend if you would like to volunteer. Just contact Jim Chandler or Tom Riddle to ask where help is needed.
Plans are to carry in the targets on Sunday, hopefully with 4 wheelers (bring yours if you have one). We will load the targets into a trailer and unload them at the Club meeting on Monday.
We will also need help at the club meeting Monday night. During the meeting we will be carrying in the targets from the trailer. We’ve been averaging about 14 people at our club meetings so this work party should be a relatively fast one.
YMCA News
Thanks go out to Ed Rebarich, Jim Chandler, Tom Riddle, and Dick Glaseman. They gave their time to run the Archery class at the YMCA from June 25 to June 29.
Hunting Season News
Hunting season is getting closer. If you are planning on hunting this year, you should already have permission to hunt from a landowner. You should also be practicing shooting several times a week. The time you put in now will help you with that important single shot that hopefully will present itself to you.
One thing to remember is that when you practice you should be shooting with the same weight field point as you will be hunting with. It isn’t quite time yet to be practicing with your broadheads, but be sure you do practice with them before the season starts.
Deer Permit Fees for 2001
A resident deer hunting permit is $23.25; a nonresident permit is $151.00. Both prices include the $1 agent fee. A Nebraska Habitat Stamp, required of all resident hunters 16 years of age and older, and all nonresident hunters regardless of age, is $10. The Habitat Stamp is valid for all hunting during the calendar year as dated.
Support Needed
There are plans on the drawing board for a Youth Outdoor Skills training facility and public shooting range to be built in conjunction with the Lake Wanahoo project.
The project will be located near Highways 77 and 92 at the north edge of Wahoo Nebraska.
The proposal is to build a 200 yard and 100 yard rifle range, a 50 yard pistol range, a trap and skeet range, an archery range, and a 14 target 3D course. The site will also include classrooms and will support hunter education classes as well as youth mentored hunting opportunities.
Your support is needed to get this proposal through. There are about 18 people that are against this proposal and they are very vocal about it. Unfortunately, a lot of calls from these few people are what the legislatures are listening to because of the low number of calls from sportsmen in favor of the proposal.
There are two upcoming opportunities to help with this initiative. The first is on July 23rd. A meeting is planned on the 23rd at the Aksarben aquarium to discuss the project and discuss how it can be supported. The second meeting is the Final Public meeting on the project that will be held on August 1. This meeting will be at the Wahoo Fire Hall - take Hwy 77 to Wahoo, and at the stoplight go 1 block north and 1 block east. The meeting at the Fire Hall will need a lot of support from sportsmen to show they are in favor of the project. Please come out to provide a show of support for this project by the hunting and shooting community.

Work Party Teams
Both work party teams are being asked to help with the August 4,5 shoot.
American Cancer Society
I received a request to add this to our newsletter. Please contact Toby if you would like to support this worthy cause - and would like a chance to win a new bow.
The Picayune, MS Chapter of the American Cancer Society will hold its annual Relay for Life community fund raiser at the Picayune Memorial High School Stadium on August 3 and 4 from 5:00 pm to 5:00 am. This year approximately 30 teams totaling 400 members will directly participate in the Relay. The twelve hour event will be attended by over 5,000 people.
This year our team is sponsoring two raffles for bows. We have a Mathews “Ultra Max” bow valued at $600 that has been donated by Mathews and Pro Stop Hunting Supply and also a PSE “Beast” bow valued at $300 that has also been donated by Pro Stop Hunting Supply. The raffle tickets for the Mathews bow are $5 each and the tickets for the PSE bow are $1 each. If any members are interested in purchasing raffle tickets for these bows they can do so by making a check payable to the “American Cancer Society” (tax deductible) and mailing them to the address below. Please provide the number of each type ticket wanted and assure the name and telephone number including area code that you want on the ticket is included. Drawings for both bows will be held Friday, August 3 at the Picayune, MS Relay for Life event. The winner does not need to be present to win. Shipping of the bow to the winner will be at the cost of our team.

Bob Ragsdale's Archery Talk
The following are excerpts from an article from Bob Ragsdale’s web site (http://www.bowhunting.net/bobragsdale/Q&A.htm). Visit that site for the entire article, and to see other interesting articles.
WHY CAN'T ARROW SPINE CHARTS BE 100% FOOLPROOF? Many bows do not match the expectations of the chart! FOR EXAMPLE. Few if any ever pick up on the fact that there is virtually no allowance made for the actual draw length of a compound bow when it is not directly related to the cut length of the arrow.
Tradition dictates that an arrow will generally be cut somewhere between one inch longer and one inch shorter than the draw length rating of a compound bow. Therefore, if you choose to use a longer or shorter arrow than which is expected to be used in your bow there are no provisions to explain how to allow for it. To make it even worse, it can vary in both directions, i.e. the bow may actually be more capable (powerful) than you expect or it may be less powerful, each of which will cause to choose a dramatically inadequate spine. For example, there is absolutely no reason why you can't load-in and shoot a 32 inch arrow in a 26 inch draw bow or more commonly, shoot about a 26 inch arrow in a 32 inch draw bow. Believe me that every combination between these 2 extremes is in wide use this very minute.
For those who are not aware of it, I believe and loudly profess that attempting to achieve an acceptable arrow spine is the; Number 1, Paramount, Biggest, problem in the sport. It probably causes most bow setup (tuning) frustrations and mis-understandings, particularly when trying to control winged broadheads on the leading end of the arrow.
At best, arrow charts have only been offered as an 'educated best first guess' and should never be expected to be the absolute final word.
SPEED CRAZE BOW DESIGNS. In more recent years compound bows have become far more complex in the sense that the laws of physics have been maxed out in every governing area of bow design. Few models contain equal amounts of the several tricks of the trade. That is, to obtain the higher capability (velocity) ratings they have been 'souped up' in every possible area, in fact to the point that how good or how comfortable a bow feels to draw is no longer a factor.
ALTERNATIVES TO BUYING DIFFERENTLY SPINED ARROWS. Understanding all this better should make it more clear why in the past you may have had to either; reduce your point weight, and/or shorten the shaft all you could, and/or lower your bow peak weight (all three is often done) in order to effectively stiffen and be able to still use the first shaft size you picked with your best guess from the chart. Easton is the first to realize how difficult shaft selection can be for you and includes this disclaimer notice for clarification; (excerpt) '- IN THESE CASES, YOU'LL NEED TO EXPERIMENT AND USE STIFFER OR WEAKER SPINE SHAFTS TO FIT YOUR SITUATION.'
Since there simply is no absolute perfect patented test that I know of which can positively assure you that you are even close, much less perfect, we can only make a personal final decision based on experience. By the 'seat-of-our-pants' if you will. Commonly used are either;
The visual arrow-in-flight appearance. The arrow grouping conclusion. Comparing bare shaft impact points. Comparing same-weight-broadhead impact points.
