February Club Meeting
There were 11 members at the February meeting. We discussed plans for the February 7-9 Winter Sports Festival, the outdoor sportsman's show scheduled for February 14-16, NFAA insurance requirements, and a potential location for a large indoor 3D that we may host next year. There was one new member voted in at the meeting.
New members:
There was one new member voted in at the club meeting and another accepted into the club during the Winter games per a vote of the board. Our newest members are Scott & Lynne Specht, and Steve & Ruth Williamson. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.
2003 Dues
If you have not paid your dues for 2003, you do not have a key that works. The lock at the indoor range has been changed and you need to pay your dues to receive a new one. Dues become delinquent as of the March club meeting. If you have not paid your dues as of the March club meeting this is your last newsletter.
Note also that our dues are pro-rated the year you join, so that in the year you join you only pay dues to the end of the year. In January, you then need to pay a full year’s dues. If you join anytime the following year, you must pay a full year’s dues, even if you join later in the year.
Finally, if you decide you will not be rejoining, please return your key. We re-tool the old keys from year to year, so the keys are needed back each year.
If you have any questions on dues, please contact Dave Holthouse.
3D News
The Winter Archery Festival is now over. 3D scores are listed on the last page of this newsletter. Thank you to all that helped set-up, tear down, and work the tournament. Everyone that shot seemed to have a great time.
The only negative for this shoot was that we only received $6.00 per shooter at this shoot. The Winter Festival board decided to give all clubs less this year to build up an account to get the shoot started next year. We calculated that we actually lost money at this shoot, mainly due to the cost of the 3D targets and the number of shoots they can be used for. If we do not receive a more fair amount next year, I for one vote we not participate, but instead hold our own shoot.
Hunting news
There are only 7 months left to get ready for next year’s hunting season. Now is the time to start looking for deals on camo and new equipment for next year. (I found a new rain proof jacked recently marked down from $99 to $30.)
If you have any children that will need to take bowhunters education training to hunt next year, start looking for classes now. You can call game and parks or look for scheduled classes on their web site. I am planning on scheduling one for early in April this year if you want to watch for that. There should be more information on that in the next newsletter. Note that when we do schedule one, the range will be closed for the two week-nights that we hold the class.
NFAA News
Ahamo has insurance with the NFAA (National Field Archery Association), to protect us in the event of accidents that may occur at our range. There is a change to their insurance eligibility requirements being proposed that will impact us. That change is to require a specific number of NFAA members by a club in order for them to purchase NFAA insurance. The proposal is to require 100% membership in the NFAA for clubs with less than 20 members, and at least 20 NFAA members for clubs with more than 20 members.
How will that change affect Ahamo? I’m not certain how many NFAA members we have - I think it’s around 12. If the proposal passes, we will need to encourage more of our members to join, or find another insurance carrier. If you have an interest in joining, just visit the NFAA web site at http://www.nfaa-archery.org. The cost is $50.00 per year, plus the cost of joining our State Organization. To view information on the Nebraska State organization see their site at http://www.nesaa.org. The Nebraska fees are $10.00 per individual, or $25.00 for a family. The Nebraska membership includes a newsletter and allows you to participate in State Shoots. The National membership has quite a few benefits. The following is from their web site:
NFAA Membership:
As a member, you will receive bi-monthly issues of Archery magazine, the official NFAA magazine.
Archery magazine is filled with national archery news and information, articles on equipment, regulations, tournaments, and events for target, 3D and hunting archers. There are articles on purchasing, tuning, shooting and hunting with all types of archery tackle. You will read articles written about tournaments and hunts, from experienced archers and hunters. This is a must-see magazine, so don't miss another issue, sign up now!
The NFAA has a very comprehensive awards program for both the hunter and the tournament shooter. Awards begin with patches and pins for the "Cub" archers and progress to the Compton Medal of Honor.
Indoor and Outdoor league programs: Everything preprinted and complete with instructions on how to set up and run your leagues.
Archery instructor and master coach schools are provided for archers seeking to become archery coaches.
Liability insurance is offered to affiliated clubs and pro shops.

Opportunity for 2004
We may be able to obtain a large building at the Wahoo County Fairgrounds to host a 3D shoot next year. It’s a pretty large building and it would allow us to set up as large a shoot as we want. We have already requested it for the 2nd or 3rd week of March, and if approved we can get down to some serious planning. It would be nice to host a very large shoot, draw a lot of shooters, and then reduce the reliance we have on all of our other shoots to provide the income needed to pay our rent and utilities.
Leagues:
If you have not participated in our leagues, you’re missing out on a lot. It’s a chance to shoot along with other club members, compete against others, see any new equipment that members are trying out, keep your skills sharp throughout the year, and discuss any tuning or tackle questions you may have. The current league is just about over, and we will be starting a new league in another week.
You don’t need to be a league member to shoot along with the league - just come on down any Tuesday to shoot along. If you want to join, that makes it even more fun. League shooting - give it a try.
