Club Banquet:
How to make your reservation:
The club banquet and annual meeting will be held on January 9th at Mr C’s. Please call Ed (345-7608) to make reservations by January 4th (Tuesday). If you are on-line you can also Email me (hunterlee@msn.com). We will be holding a board meeting before the banquet and will be planning the meeting so it is short and we can spend more time socializing and giving out awards. Bring your deer pictures.
If your name is not on the list of those that shot a deer this year, please call Ed so we can get your award ready. Ed also needs to know if you have a plaque already or if you need one this year.
The choices are Steak(13.95), Chicken(12.95), Shrimp(16.15). The social hour will start at 6:30 and dinner starts at 7:00. Please bring two checks - one you can use to pay for dinner with, and the other for your Dues.
Indoor 3D Planned for Sunday Dec 20th
The second 3D of this indoor season for our club will be held on December 20th. Registration will be from 8:00 till 2:00 for a continuous shooting line. Come out and shoot. There will be a work party on Saturday the 19th to set up the targets. Be at the indoor range at 3:00 to help set up. We could also use some help with food and registration during the Day on Sunday as well - sign up at the work party on Saturday for a block of time to help with registration Sunday. If you will be shooting, bring down some desert items on Sunday.
Indoor Leagues
Indoor leagues are still taking place on Tuesdays. Feel free to shoot along with the league for practice. There is a slight fee for shooting along with the league, but given the company and fun on Tuesday night’s it’s well worth it. Shooting starts at 7:00.
1999 work party changes
The board will be recommending to the club at the annual meeting that we do away with the workparty requirements all together in 1999. We want to do this so we can concentrate on getting our membership numbers up. If we still get adequate help at the work parties then we won’t need to reinstate this in 2000. The calling committee will still contact members about workparties, and we will take attendance at workparties to continue the practice of drawing for prizes at the annual banquet based on the number of workparties attended. If you have any concerns regarding this, please talk to one of the club officers.
Hunting Season News
Members are continuing to be successful this year. Be sure to contact Ed Rebarich or Lee Pereksta when you get any deer this year so we can add you to the list of those that will receive deer awards. Also, give me one of your deer pictures and I’ll put it in the newsletter. If you get a buck and want to enter it in the big buck contest please contact me by January 2nd at the latest to make arrangements to get it scored. Members that have harvested animals this year are listed below:

1999 Club Officers
The ballot box for nomination of club officers is at the indoor range. We welcome your nominations for club offices. Please check with who you want to nominate to be sure they want to run for the position you want to nominate them for.
Your Dues are due in January
As of the January Banquet, your key will no longer work at the indoor range. You will need to pay your dues for 1999 to receive a new key and membership card. Remember, it costs about $4.00 an hour to shoot at a commercial range. If you make 12 two hour visits to a commercial range per year, that dollar amount is enough to pay your Ahamo dues for a year of unlimited shooting. Plus you get a newsletter, can shoot in leagues, and get a $2.00 discount at tournaments. If you have any questions about paying your dues, please call Dave Holthouse (291-0211).
JOAD
JOAD is still going strong. If your child wants to shoot, bring him or her down to the range on a Thursday night. We can still work with more kids. If you know of any young person 18 or younger who wants to learn Archery, just bring them down or have them call Bill Arledge to find out about the program.
Letter Received from the YMCA Camp
Dear Bill and Ed
Thanks to you & your club for the archery bows & box of arrows for our camp. They will definitely be put to hard use. The storage area is also very much appreciated.
Thanks again,
Nancy Furman

Email Received from Gary Brunberg:
I am forwarding this e-mail from the Principal at Platteview Central Middle School, Springfield NE. I talked to him months ago about the Archery activity that he addresses in his e-mail. I am sending it to the heads of Ahamo, TNUSA, and the NBA to see if there is an interest in helping to conduct this event.
As you can see there are times in the afternoon that will need to be covered. Target butts for shooting in the gym will have to be transported and 3 to 5 individuals will have to be on hand to teach the youth the basics of shooting a bow. We want to make it fun and yet informative enough to peak their interest. I welcome any suggestions that any of you may have and I look forward to your prompt responses.
Shoot Straight,
Gary
Mr. Brunberg,
We are beginning to firm up plans for our February mini-courses. We had discussed this topic at the start of the school year and you asked me to contact you when we were closer to mini-course time. One of the purposes f our mini-courses is to help our students develop skills in making worthwhile use of leisure time. In previous years mini-courses have been greatly enjoyed by our students.
On Tuesday, February 9 we have 2:50 - 3:25 available and on both Wednesday and Thursday we can meet from 2:40 - 3:25. In the event we would want more time .. with planning .. say on Thursday perhaps we could allow students that wanted to stay longer .. say until 4:30 / 5 PM to do so.
With advance planning we may be able to solve some of the student transportation problems inherent with students staying after 3:25 PM.
I hope that you are willing to help us with the archery course. I certainly would understand if your schedule would not allow you to participate.
If you are willing to "teach" this mini-course I would be willing to be your contact person and helper.
If this is a go .. I would like to have your ideas about the meeting place .. our PC gym may be available and perhaps with planning we could even get one of the senior high gyms. We would need a one or two sentence course description .. would their be any fees / or costs that students would need to be aware of during registration. I would suggest that we recommend that beginners sign up for our class .. if students with archery experience want to sign up OK, fine.
I would like to see the course provide many shooting opportunities for all students .. of course safety issues would need upfront resolution. I know with your experience your ideas and participation would help us make this a really fun opportunity for our kids.
If you would like to discuss any of this information please give me a call, stop in, or suggest a time when I could call you. Our initial planning needs to be completed by January 10. Students will be given the opportunity to sign up for a mini-course and as possible we will give students their first choice.
Ms. Wiese, counselor, is our mini-course coordinator and always does a great job. If you have questions she is another person that may be able to help.
Last year's mini-courses included: card games, board games, and fun; comedy on video, computer games; creative scrapbooking; creative stamping; fundamentals of guitar playing; jazzercize; make up - "beautiful you"; mode rockets; pop art and cartooning; skin deep; valentine shirts; weight training
After student sign up we will determine if their is enough student interest to have the class meet. Some classes do not meet due to lack of student interest. Different years different classes are the "in" thing to do. I would be excited if we could offer an archery class to our students.
Thanks for considering our invitation and I look forward to hearing from you.
Happy Holidays! Ralph Glock
Hunting Tips
Here’s a tip from me..I discuss this at my Bowhunter Education classes. — How much should you lead a moving deer when shooting at it.
The answer is all science if you think about it.
First, an arrow leaves the bow at between 180 and 240 feet per second, then starts to slow down. You could then say it will travel 60 to 80 feet in 1/3 of a second. You could also say that’s about 20 to 25 yards in 1/3 of a second.
Next, how fast does a deer walk. If a human is walking slowly - say, one step per second (try walking at that speed - it seems slow), that’s about 1 yard per second. At 20 to 25 yards, you need to aim 1 foot (1/3 of a yard) ahead of where you want to hit at a slowly walking deer. At 10 yards, that’s about 6 inches; and 6 inches is further than you think. Measure the distance from the x ring and 1 ring on a single spot face - it’s less than 6 inches.
A sprinter can run 100 yards in 10 seconds, which is 10 yards per second. At 1/3 of a second, that’s 10 feet. I know that a deer can outrun a sprinter, but if you use that speed - you can say that you need to lead a fast running deer by 10 feet at 20 yards, and by 5 feet at 10 yards. Note that 5 feet is more than one body length.
The answer to the question then, of how fast should you lead a moving deer is - don’t shoot at a moving deer; unless it’s moving slowly; and then you will still need to lead it when you shoot.
Many experienced hunters make a bleat or a grunt sound to stop a deer when it is walking past them to stop the deer. This does work, I got my Fontenelle doe this year by stopping it with a fawn bleat so I could shoot.
Congratulations
Congratulations go out to Dave Wise, our club Secretary. Dave just became a Grandpa for the first time.
Club Finances
We are finishing the year with less money in our treasury than we would like to have. We also have a need to replace our 3D targets for the upcoming season. If you will be rejoining the club in 1999, please don’t procrastinate. Contact Dave Holthouse to make arrangements if you will not be at the Club Banquet.
We will also be in a mode of doing everything we can to increase our membership in 1999. If you have any friends that are interested in joining our Club, please invite them to complete an application. Membership forms are available at the indoor range.
Newsletter Articles
If anyone has a newsletter article, or even some equipment they would like to sell, please let me know. I also need to update the list of shoots to include 1999 3D and target tournaments. If anyone has a list of shoots for 1999, please send or give them to me. I need them for our Web Page and the newsletter, Thanks.
