2004 Club Officers

If you know anyone that would make a good club officer, check to see if he or she would like to run for office, and let one of the board members know. You should also feel free to discuss this at leagues to see if anyone there might have an interest in running for a club office.

All club positions are now open... President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Sergeant at Arms, 3D Coordinator, VP of indoor, and Trustees.

If you have any ideas about your club, and what could be done to make it grow and prosper.. here’s your chance. Make a commitment towards making it a better and more fun organization and step up to the plate. Some of the officers are definitely not running for their office again, so please consider taking a position.

Hunting season News

The list of successful hunters is still growing, but I suspect there are more that are not on my list. If you harvested a deer and your name is not in the list below, please contact me. I need to add your name to the list so that you are eligible for the end of year deer awards. I also need to know if you harvested a deer with a rack you would like measured to enter in the club’s big buck contest.

Here’s something important also... If you have harvested a deer and need a plaque to go along with the plates we will be giving out at the banquet we need to know.

If you have already notified me of your deer, please notify me again if you need a plaque.

Please call Lee Pereksta at 592-3856 to report your deer or Email Lee at hunterlee@msn.com. Your name will be added to the newsletter, and you will get a deer award at the end of the year at the annual banquet.

So far there are 2 deer that I know of that will be entered in the big buck contest. Both were shot by Dick Sousa. The November newsletter reported that Dick had shot a large buck the Friday before the start of rifle season. It was a large 5x5 that green scored at 144 3/8. In December, Dick shot a large 4x4 that scored more than his first buck. This one scored 144 5/8. Congratulations go out to Dick, for two bucks in one season, that some people never shoot in a lifetime of hunting. I’m still trying to get Dick to write a story about his deer for the newsletter.

Deer Story:

Here’s another deer story from me. Again, if you’re getting tired of my stories I encourage you to write one and send it to me, or send me an interesting article you think would be a fit for our newsletter.

This story is from the Fontinelle forest hunt this year. The Fontinelle hunt is a one week hunt that has taken place for the past several years to reduce the overpopulated deer herd in Fontinelle Forest. Until this year hunters were only allowed to harvest doe. This year the forest developed a points system that allows hunters to harvest bucks. The points system has to do with does harvested, hours hunted, and number of years hunted. When a buck is harvested your points go back to zero. I had enough points for a buck and was looking forward to a chance to get one at Fontinelle this year.

Before the season started, I walked quite a bit of the forest looking for buck sign. I wanted to try a different area than I had hunted in the past, since I had not seen a great number of bucks at Fontinelle when I was looking for doe in previous years. I found a pretty good looking area just full of rubs and scrapes. I was hoping it would pan out, even though the hunt started in December. December is when the secondary rut kicks in. It’s not as active as the primary rut in November, but bucks do chase doe during this rut.

The first day of the hunt, there was snow on the ground and it was pretty cold. I was planning on staying all day, so I had a lot of layered clothes. I was hunting with Dick and Steve and we had our radios along to touch bases on occasion to see how each other was doing.

I was in my stand by a little after 6:30 am, with sun rise happening at about 7:30. By 9:00 I hadn’t seen anything. I heard from Dick and Steve just before 9:00, and both had seen deer early but nothing close or big enough to shoot. A little after 9:00, I saw a couple of doe just south of my stand running along a ditch. They weren’t close enough to even think about shooting, but seeing something seemed to warm me up a little. I was about 20 feet up, standing in my stand, leaning back against the tree, holding my bow while the bottom limb rested in the bow holster tied to my leg.

All of a sudden I saw two bucks directly in front of me. They came up over a drop off about 60 yards away. The smaller one turned and went back over the hill and the larger one came straight towards me. I turned slightly to my right so I could draw and shoot as it came straight in and kept as still as possible. The wind seemed to die down and all of a sudden my glasses started to fog up. I started breathing out of the left corner of my mouth, but my right lens was still hard to see through. As the deer got closer, I drew back and kept shifting my head slightly trying to get a clear view through my glasses. The deer turned right and started to walk through an opening in the trees about 15 yards away. I made a high pitched wining sound where I wanted it to stop, and sighted though my clouded glasses, my peep sight, and my 20 yard pin.

The deer stopped and I squeezed my release as I kept aiming at the spot I wanted the shot to go. My release went off and the arrow was gone. I never saw it hit, but watched as the deer ran about 10 yards and slowed to a walk. At about 30 yards away, it’s back legs seemed to wobble. It turned right, walked about 5 more yards and collapsed. Just as it went down, a much larger buck came up over the hill and walked right up the the deer I had just shot. This one was a had a good part of its hide worn away, probably from rubbing trees or fence posts, and had a high thick rack. The buck looked at the downed deer for a few seconds and walked off.

I used my radio to let Dick and Steve know I just shot one, waited for 15 minutes to settle down and think about what I would be doing next, and slowly got out of my stand. I quietly approached the deer to be sure it was dead, and felt pretty good as I looked at the typical 10 point rack with an extra brow tine.

I field dressed the deer, hung it up in a tree using my portable pulley system, and headed back to my truck with my gear. I stopped at the Fontinelle forest building and asked if one of the rangers would be able to help me haul it out. It was really nice when one of them said they could do that. The deer was pretty big and it took a bit of hauling to get it out of the forest. The snow helped a lot though, and after about 45 minutes of dragging we loaded it into my truck.
