Deer Stories from our members
Looks like I’m going to bore you with one more deer story - there’s still some empty space to fill in this newsletter. Please send me your story or article for the newsletter and I’ll add it to a future newsletter.
This story takes place on November 8. I was hunting with Steve Murphy in Union Nebraska. My stand was about 20 yards from a stream running through the farmers property we were hunting on. The stand was half way down a slope with the stream at the bottom. The slope was on a tree line separating two fields and the stream was about 10 yards wide and deep enough that I had seen deer swim across it.
I had been in my stand since 2:00 and hadn’t seen anything until about 4:45. It was pretty chilly and I had been putting the hood from my sweatshirt up and down from time to time whenever I started shivering. At 5:00 I saw a small 3x3 cross between me and the stream and thought about how easy a shot it would be if I wanted to take it.
At about 5:10 it was starting to get darker and I only had about 20 minutes of hunting light left when I looked behind me and saw a large buck walking along the tree line straight towards me. I took my sweatshirt hood down and got in position for a shoot. The deer stopped and seemed to turn into the woods and I thought my chance was gone. Then I saw him work a scrape for a minute or so and then continue towards me. He stayed much closer to the stream than the other deer and didn’t stop walking. I make a wining noise kind of like a cat to even a lost fawn just as he got to a good spot for a shot. The deer stopped, I aimed and squeezed my release, and the arrow hit with a crack. The deer dropped right down, and my first thought was that it was a spine shoot.
I got down out of my stand quickly to make a second shoot, and just as I hit the ground I heard a splash. I looked and saw the deer swimming across the stream. It couldn’t make it up the bank on the other side and started down the stream. I decided to go up the hill and call out to Steve for help, and then follow the deer down the stream. When I got back to the stream, the deer was heading back to my side and died half way across.
All that was sticking out of the water was the antlers. I made several attempts to toss a rope around them but didn’t have much luck. I was trying to reach out with a stick to put the rope over its antlers when I fell in. I went almost to my waist before I pulled myself back out. I finally gave up, waded in, and looped the rope over the antlers. I got out of the water just as Steve got there. We pulled it up the bank, I field dressed it, and we headed out to Steve’s truck. It was a good sized deer with a rack that scored a little over 120.
From when I waded into the water until we got back to Steve’s truck I was just in my t-shirt and jeans. Before I made my shot I had been shivering. After the shot, and until we finished loading the deer into the truck I didn’t feel cold at all. It’s amazing what a little adrenaline will do to keep you warm.
