Key Dates to Remember
Aug 25 Work party at the indoor range to cut cardboard, 10:00 AM Sept 4 Start of indoor leagues, 7:00 Sept 10 Club meeting, 7:00 Indoor range
August Club Meeting
The August meeting was attended by about 20 members. It was proceeded by a workparty to carry down the 3D targets we had used at the YMCA camp this year. We discussed a workparty to cut and replace the cardboard, the last 3D shoot, and the next one to be held in November.
New Members
There was one new member voted in at the club meeting, Graham Glynn. Welcome to the Ahamo Archery Club.
Indoor Leagues to start....
Indoor leagues will be starting on September 4. Note that date because it is coming up very soon. We decided to get the September leagues started a little earlier this year. Some of the members were getting a little anxious to start shooting indoors again.
Come on out and shoot along. It’s a good chance to keep your shooting form up during the hunting season and it’s a lot of fun getting together with other members. All members are welcome to shoot along with the league without being on the league if there’s room on the shooting line. We also welcome non members to shoot along with us, but their league fees will be a dollar higher.
Outdoor Leagues
The outdoor leagues are pretty much over now. They tapered off to just a couple of us shooting near the end of the league. Earlier in the season attendance was pretty good and we had a lot of fun shooting with a money payback each night that depended on how many points each person won.A big thank you goes out to Mike Stanner for letting us shoot at his house again this year, and for setting up and keeping the targets at his house. Those of us that shot had a lot of fun and really enjoyed Mike’s hospitality.
August 4,5 3D
The August 3D was a big success. We had about 120 shooters and it ran very well. After the shoot we loaded the targets into Jack White’s stock trailer and unloaded them the next day at the indoor range. Jack, we really appreciate you letting us use your trailer again, and also you hauling it back and forth for us.
Thank you also to all of the members that met us down at the indoor range on Monday the 6th to carry the targets in. We had a good turnout and the work party went pretty quick. When it was all over we had pizza and pop for all members that were there and it was a pretty good time.
Next 3D Shoot
Our next 3D will be in November. We discussed it briefly and may make it a 2 day shoot. The indoor 3D shoots set up pretty fast and we thought we’d just open up for shooting at about noon, following set up. Then the members that helped set up can shoot a little earlier and can all shoot together. We would also let others register and shoot after set up, if they would rather shoot on Saturday instead of Sunday.
The shoot is still a couple of months away, so watch for more information is it gets closer.
Work Party Opportunity
We will be having a work party on August 25th to cut and replace cardboard at the indoor range. Please come on down to help. Charles Vincent will be bringing his table saw down to cut the cardboard and we will need members to take down the old cardboard and rotate it or replace it. This will make it a lot tighter and in good shape for our indoor season.
Note again the date.. August 25th... that’s next Saturday. The workparty will start at 10:00 AM.
Hunting season is almost here
Only a few weeks remain before the start of hunting season. By now you should have permission to hunt and should be making a last trip to set up and inspect your stands. You should be practicing pretty regularly and getting close to when you should re-set your sights with practice broadheads. Remember that broadheads rarely fly the same as field points. Also note that in many cases, you will need to actually re-tune your bows before they will shoot at their optimum with a broadhead.
Big Buck Contest
Like last year, Ahamo will be giving an award for the buck with the largest rack. If you get a buck this year and want to enter it in the big buck contest just bring it down to a club meeting. Lee Pereksta will measure it for the club award. The measurement will be ‘unofficial’ and there is no need to wait for the ‘drying’ period.
Deer Awards for 2001
Like pervious years, Ahamo will be giving awards to all members that harvest a deer this year. When the season starts, please notify Lee Pereksta when you harvest a deer. At the annual banquet, Ahamo members receive a nice plaque for the first deer they get while a member, and plates to add to the plaque for additional deer harvested each year.
Broadhead Tuning
Here are a few tips for broadhead tuning.
First of all, make sure that your field points and broadheads are the same weight. If they are, this will make tuning and setting your sights much easier. If the weights are different, then tuning will be way off for the broadhead, and your sights will also be off by quite a bit. Note that the box your broadheads come in will be marked with the grain weight. Mine are 125 grain Thunderheads, and my field points are the same weight. If you are not sure how much your field points weigh you can take them to a pro shop and ask them to weigh the points for you. You can also buy new points just to be sure you have the correct weight. You should also note that field points can be bought to fit your shaft size. Points that are a lot larger or smaller than they should be can tear up a target pretty bad.
Before tuning your broadheads, make sure they are sitting on the shaft straight. Two things to note here, one is the alignment and the other the straightness of the broadhead. Some people don’t pay attention to this, but I think it is important... Make sure your broadheads are all aligned the same. The best way to do this is to line them up with your fletchings. A three blade broadhead should line up exactly, a two or four blade broadhead should line up cross wise on the arrows so that when the arrow is on the string they all look the same. This is important because when the arrow leaves the bow, it flexes and the air catching the blade will cause it to bend a little more or less depending on how it is aligned. If they are all aligned the same, all your arrows to flex the same. To adjust the broadhead you will need to replace it with a field point, heat the insert, rotate the point, and re-check the broadhead.
Another thing to check is straightness of the broadhead on the shaft. Do this by putting the point down and spinning the arrow on a table or piece of wood. You can also roll your arrows on a flat table with the broadhead hanging over the side. Check to be sure your shaft spins with no wobble at the point, and that when rolling, the point rolls straight without going up or down. Cheaper broad heads will have more of a chance to be off set a little and wobble, but good ones can also have a wobble from time to time. If there is a wobble, it will be because your insert is not mounted straight in the shaft, or the broadhead is off-set. If there is a wobble, I first check my insert, then discard the broadhead if it still does not spin straight.
After all of this, you should be ready to tune. Hopefully, you have tuned your bow before and know how to do this. The way I do it, is by paper tuning. I take a 3D target part that I use just for tuning and put it behind a paper tuner. Then I shoot through the paper and note where the feather and the broadhead cut the paper. There are tuning charts you can use to tell which way to move your knock or rest... but a rule of thumb that works for me, is to “follow the point” with your knocking point. If the feather part of the tear is low and the point high, then your knocking point should move higher.
For left and right tears the tuning guides are different for finger and release shooters. For release shooters, the rest should follow the point - move the rest to the right for a point that is to the right of the feathers. The tuning guides say to move the rest to the left for finger shooters when the point is to the right of the feathers.
This may sound a little confusing, but reviewing a good tuning guide will make it easier to understand. You should note also, that the way to move the knock or rest could be the opposite if your arrow is fishtailing quickly - so don’t take the information above as gospel. If you cannot get your point and feather to pass through the same hole, then experiment a little until you get the best flight.
Another thing to note, is that you may have a difficult time tuning if your fletching is contacting your rest, or if you are torquing your bow with your hand. You may also not have arrows that are matched correctly to your bow. In addition, your bow could be out of tune, with your cams turning over differently.
The best advice, is to have your bow tuned with field points well before hunting season, so that you have time to work with it to get an optimum arrow flight. Then when hunting season gets closer, you will only need to inspect and align your broadheads and make slight adjustments to your set up so your broadheads will fly correctly. Don’t forget to reset your sights after tuning.
With Sympathy
