August 7 Club Meeting
Club Meeting Highlights
Club Meeting Highlights The August meeting was a short one - Thank you again Bill for quickly getting through our club business. The meeting was over shortly after 7:30, and there were 12 members present. We discussed the Cabalas shoot, our last outdoor 3d, the indoor range, obtaining a new telephone answering machine, and a workparty to bring in our outdoor targets.
New Members
There were no new members voted in at the August meeting.
Last Outdoor 3D
Our last outdoor 3D of the year was a hugh success. We had almost 200 shooters and it ran very well. Thank you Mike and Dustin for coordinating the 3D shoots this year. Thanks also to John Terfone for coordinating the food, and to everyone that helped him. There was also a lot of help from many of our club members setting up, running, and tearing down after the shoot.
There was no rest for several of our members, as they helped Bill Lewis with the Cabelas shoot the weekend after our outdoor 3D. There were over 600 shooters at that shoot and it went very well. A big plus from the Cabelas shoot was our club being able to purchase all of the targets from two of the ranges used at the shoot - for $2,000. We obtained 40 targets that were in very good shape. We should be able to get through another year without purchasing any additional targets.
Work Parties
There was a work party scheduled and held on August 12th. Work party team 2 (Rich Chandler’s team) met at the indoor range to unload all of the Cabelas targets, and team 1 (Bill Rhoades’ team) met at the outdoor range to pick up the outdoor targets and equipment.
The work teams cleaned out the back room, and assembled and stacked all of the 3D targets. Note that there will be a workparty scheduled shortly to carry out all of the scrap wood and trash from the back room to a dumpster that we will be ordering. There is a large stack of old targets on the floor of the range that club members are welcome to take. Some targets may be set up to use for broadhead shooting so please leave these at the range.
If you shoot at the broadhead targets - Please remember to sweep up the foam after you are done. It is very upsetting for those of us that have to sweep up the mess of others before we can even start shooting.

Indoor Leagues
Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about indoor leagues again. At the club meeting we decided to start on the second Tuesday of September. Shooting in a league during hunting season is an excellent way to keep your shooting form in shape for when that Big Buck appears. Since many of us only shoot one or two arrows in a season, it’s a good idea to keep in shape for when it really matters. For target shooters, it’s a good way to get a jump on the indoor season.
Outdoor American Round League
Many thanks to Mike Stanner for hosting the American Round league again this year. It wasn’t a large money maker for the club, but it was a lot of fun. Several of us shot at Mike’s and all together we collected $141. There was a payout of $68 to the league shooters and $73 went to the club.
For the 3 months we shoot, Mike set up the targets for us each week and stored them in his shed from week to week. Thanks again Mike for hosting the leagues.
Hunting Season is Almost here
In less than a month, many of us will be heading for our tree stands and hoping that a big buck comes by. Many of us also have special doe only bonus tags this year.
Be sure that you are ready for the season. By now you should have your hunting location ready; from obtaining the land owners permission, to the setting up of stands. Hopefully you will also have checked your equipment to be sure it is in safe working order (especially your stands and safety belts).
Remember that broadheads do not shoot the same as field points. Before venturing out this year, be sure your arrows have been shot (and maybe even re-tuned) with broadheads, and that your sights have been reset for your broadheads.
I did a little experimenting last year and found that the same broadheads often shoot differently. I had been shooting one practice broadhead to reset my sights - and just for the heck of it, I put practice blades on my hunting broadheads. It turned out that my practice head was shooting a little off and all my good hunting heads shot the same. I picked out the broadheads I would be hunting with, reset my sights, and had a very successful season.
A tip to note also, is that all of your broadheads should be aligned the same. This is because the flexing of your arrow during the shot, and the alignment of the broadheads will cause the wind to plane your arrows slightly. If your broadheads are all aligned the same, then the wind planing will be the same for all your shots (I align my broadheads with the fletching of my arrows). Be especially careful that your practice broadheads are set up just like your hunting broadheads, and be sure to have shot your hunting broadheads a couple of times in practice before drawing on a deer.

Bowhunter Education
The State of Nebraska requires that everyone born after Jan 1, 1977 take a bowhunter education course in order to hunt with a bow and arrow. Also, students must reach his or her 11th birthday in the year the class is being taken in order to be a certified graduate of Bowhunter Education.
You can call Game and Parks at (402) 332-3901 to inquire about available classes. Note also that the Ahamo Web Page has a link to the Game and Parks web page. The web page contains a list of classes scheduled and a lot of good information about deer hunting. If you’ve never visited the Nebraska Game and Parks web page it would be worth your while to do so. It contains a lot of good outdoors information about our State.
Thank You’ s for club members
The last weekend of July and the first weekend of August were very busy with archery tournaments. As you can see below there were a lot of shooters at our annual 2 day shoot. Many Thanks go out to Club members for helping with that shoot; it was a hugh success.
From Bill Lewis on the August Cabelas shoot:
To Team Cabelas,
Thanks for the dedication, personal attention, and time invested into making this tournament a world class event. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank you enough.
Bill
